'Recipe for disaster': Kiwis urge American tourist to change itinerary

Dozens of Kiwis have begged an American tourist to revise her itinerary after asking for advice on plans many called 鈥渄angerous鈥.

The woman posed a question to the 121,600 members of New Zealand Travel Tips (NZTT), a private Facebook group.

She claimed her travel group would arrive in Auckland from the US at 10am and aimed to clear security and collect their rental car at 1pm. The shortest flight from the US takes a little over 12 hours, non-stop from Los Angeles.

鈥淎re we crazy to book a Hobbiton tour at 5pm and then drive on to Rotorua to our Airbnb that evening?鈥 she asked group members.

The drive from Auckland Airport to Hobbiton near Matamata takes around two hours. Tours can run from 2.5 to 3.5 hours, meaning the group would begin the final one-hour drive to Rotorua around 8pm.

鈥淚 know we will be sleep deprived but hope to get some sleep on the plane,鈥 she wrote, adding multiple people could share the driving. Within four hours, she had an almost unanimous answer from 88 Kiwis and travellers who commented: Yes, the plan was crazy.

Several pointed out how the American admitted her group would be sleep-deprived in the post.

鈥淵ou鈥檝e answered your own question. You鈥檒l be sleep deprived,鈥 wrote a user named Claire.

鈥淵ou say you have multiple drivers like it鈥檚 a good thing but you鈥檒l all be sleep deprived!鈥 another added, adding they should 鈥渂e a safe tourist, not a dead one鈥.

鈥淵es you are crazy car crash waiting to happen,鈥 one person warned, while another said their father worked as a paramedic and many fatal tourist car crashes he attended were people 鈥渇resh off the plane鈥.

Many locals said even they wouldn鈥檛 attempt just a big day of driving and activities and others urged them to remember they would be driving on the 鈥渨rong鈥 side of the road in Aotearoa.

鈥淵ou鈥檒l be trying to get used to driving on the other side of the road after a long haul flight while your body clock is trying to adjust,鈥 wrote Frank, who encouraged them to take it easy on the first day.

Susan added that adjusting to the steering wheel being on the other side, slightly different road rules and markings also require 鈥渋ntense concentration鈥.

Many said, safety aside, the itinerary wouldn鈥檛 be very enjoyable.

鈥淩oad safety is one thing but the Hobbiton tour is an active walking tour...not something I鈥檇 want to do exhausted,鈥 wrote Tania.

Another said it was a 鈥渨aste of money鈥 as they would feel 鈥渕iserable鈥 on the tour because of exhaustion.

Americans describe advice as 鈥榓larmist鈥

Only two people said the woman should go ahead with her plan and both appeared to be from the US. One said if the group got enough sleep on the flight, they would be totally fine to drive.

鈥淒on鈥檛 waste your time,鈥 she wrote.

The other said they did a similar thing and had 鈥渘o problem at all鈥 driving straight to Rotorua and doing activities.

鈥淚 was glad I didn鈥檛 listen to all of the alarmist comments on here and we didn鈥檛 waste a day having around Auckland,鈥 she wrote. 鈥淲e got good sleep on the plane, are active people, and had two drivers 鈥 although one did the driving to Rotorua鈥.

New Zealand Transport Agency offers advice

Fatigued drivers cause many fatal crashes in Aotearoa, according to the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).

As a result, the organisation has a page dedicated to the topic, including advice for avoiding driver fatigue.

NZTA suggests getting a good sleep the night before (preferably eight hours, it states) but also warns against 鈥渄riving during the hours when you鈥檙e normally sleeping鈥.

A spokesperson said NZTA typically urges tourists to take time to understand the road rules as they can be different.

They also encourage people to be well-rested and have plenty of time to reach their destinations.
