Train users warned to expect delays after earlier cancellations

Passengers on Auckland trains are being warned to expect delays and the Onehunga Line is at a standstill after all trains were halted earlier this morning.

The trains were cancelled due to an 鈥渋nfrastructure issue鈥 which has now been partially resolved.

鈥淧lease expect delays and some individual train cancellations while recovery is in place,鈥 Auckland Transport (AT) said.

Auckland Councillor Richard Hills questioned AT鈥檚 decision to shut down the track.

鈥淚鈥檓 not an engineer but surely there鈥檚 a better way to manage a track issue than closing down an entire network,鈥 Hills said.

鈥淕ovt only just invested $330m to finally upgrade track network but it feels less resilient than before.鈥

Trains across Auckland were cancelled last week due to the 鈥渉eat鈥 - causing significant disruption to rush-hour commuters and prompting Auckland Transport (AT) to lash out at KiwiRail.

Last week, AT said potentially one in three train services will be cancelled and the commuter chaos could continue until March.

KiwiRail said it would be carrying out an 鈥渁ggressive plan鈥 to fix the issues.

AT鈥檚 director of public transport, Stacey van der Putten, said it was 鈥渆normously disappointing鈥 the transport body had to cancel services because of speed restrictions put in place by KiwiRail on the network due to 鈥渉ot tracks.

鈥淭hese speed restrictions would be unlikely to be needed today if the Auckland rail network was not vulnerable because of numerous known faults,鈥 van der Putten said.

- More to come.
