Auckland bus users are still facing more听than 1,500听service cancellations daily as听the听struggle to听attract听and retain drivers continues.听听
The听Public Transport Users Association fears听the听cancellations are pushing users back into private cars.听听
Auckland Transport operates just under 12,000 bus services a day and is cancelling about 1,800 each weekday 鈥 about听12 to 14 per cent, Manager Metro听Optimisation听Richard Harrison said.听听
The听organisation听is 470 drivers short, about 20 per cent of the number needed to run full services.听听
It is a figure that has increased since the end of July听when Auckland Transport said it was about 270 drivers short.听听
鈥淚t did increase over the last month, it鈥檚 been increasing since we came out of lockdown, sadly going up since March 鈥 April, [so] cancellations have been steadily going up since then,鈥 Harrison said.听
Auckland bus drivers have received two pay increases in that time.听听
In early September, Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency approved additional funding for Auckland Transport to increase pay by听3.9 per cent, on top of the 8 per cent increase funded by Auckland Council听in听late July.听听
It brought the average bus driver wage to $26.62 an hour听
But it is too early to know if that has made a difference, Harrison said.听听

AT expects the pay rises will help attract and retain people and has been using听it听in advertising.听听
While Harrison cannot say how much longer Aucklanders will face these many听cancellations, a bus user himself, he acknowledges the frustration.听听
鈥淚t鈥檚 a big job to recruit 500 people into the industry, it鈥檚 going to take us a while to do,鈥 he said.听听
Public听Transport Users Association National Coordinator Jon Reeves points out听that听while 12 per cent may not sound like a large number, a lot of individuals are impacted.听听
鈥淭hat鈥檚 a lot of passengers who may be giving up on public transport, or are giving up on public transport and moving into private vehicles.鈥听
Mask mandate removal sees听Auckland patronage boost听听
Despite frequent cancellations, Auckland Transport reports patronage has increased since the requirement to wear a face mask听on public transport听was dropped.听听
Patronage increased to about 70 per cent of 2019 figures following the removal, up from just over 60 per cent, Harrison said.听听
But it is a different story in other听metropolitan听cities.听听
An Environment Canterbury spokesperson said their data shows a three per cent improvement in patronage from the two weeks before removal of the mask requirement, compared to the two weeks following it.听听
But it is听a very short period and difficult to directly attribute the increase to a change in mask requirements alone, they said.听听
The听spokesperson听said the promotion of听tertiary concessions听and changes to听SuperGold听access are also influencing travel听behaviours.听听
Wellington鈥檚听Metlink听General Manager Samantha Gain said two weeks after the change, they saw a three per cent increase in patronage compared to the same period last year.听听
鈥淲e don鈥檛 think this rise can be solely attributed to the removal of face masks as听it鈥檚听likely both the government鈥檚 half price fares initiative and increasing numbers of people returning to workplaces will also be relevant factors for this increase.鈥听
