The 鈥減redatory鈥 rapist brothers behind a long-running campaign of drink spiking and sexual assaults at Christchurch bar Mama Hooch have been sentenced to significant jail terms.
Roberto Jaz has been sentenced to 17 years behind bars for offending against eight women.
Danny Jaz has been sentenced to 16-and-a-half years in prison for drugging and or violating 19 women.
And they have been ordered to serve a minimum of half of their sentences before they are eligible for parole.
听鈥淭he level of your offending is unknown in this country... you helped yourself to young women with callous disregard for their rights and their dignity,鈥 said Judge Paul Mabey KC.
鈥淚 have imposed a sentence... it may not be a lot of comfort to you brave women - but I was impressed with the way you gave your evidence, and the bravery.
鈥淎nd I was impressed with your bravery today.鈥
The men were handed their fate after a long day in court where nine survivors of their 鈥渄isgusting鈥 crimes read emotional but powerful impact statements.
听stupefying, disabling, making intimate recordings of women without their knowledge or consent and supplying illicit drugs.
The听both face up to 20 years in prison for their litany of crimes.
Today neither showed any sign - at all - of emotion.
They sat in the dock side-by-side stony-faced and unmoved by anything said to or about them.

Sentencing began in the Christchurch District Court just after 10.15am.
The brothers were brought to the dock - Danny Jaz sporting a black eye.
The courtroom is packed with survivors and their supporters along with police who worked on the investigation into the brothers, dubbed Operation Sinatra.
A second courtroom has been allocated for further survivors and supporters with a live audio-visual link to the sentencing.
The sex-offending siblings鈥 brother Davide Jaz is present in court - the first time anyone has attended a hearing to support them.

Among the women set to read their impact statements are the main victims - the former Mama Hooch staffer Roberto and Danny Jaz were convicted of raping and the two then-18-year-olds whose complaint to police sparked the chain of events that led to today鈥檚 sentencing.
Survivor one: drugged and indecently assaulted by Danny Jaz
The first woman to read her statement said she met Danny Jaz at Mama Hooch and felt he was someone she could trust.
鈥淚 was so confused how it went so wrong that night,鈥 she said
鈥淓motionally this experience has completely rewired my brain鈥 this is something I will carry for life.
鈥淢r Jaz stripped away the fun of a night out for me鈥 the funloving girl has gone and will never return.鈥
She said she booked a 鈥渙ne-way ticket鈥 and left Christchurch not long after the assault, her fear of seeing her attacker too much for her to bear.
The city she loved and felt at home in has forever been 鈥渢ainted鈥 she said.
鈥淒anny, you have damaged me. My outlook on life is skewed because of what you thought you were entitled to - my body and my choices.

She said the lengthy court process had been hard to navigate.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to find any positives in this situation,鈥 she said.
鈥淥ther than the overwhelming feeling I have been immensely proud of myself and everyone stay strong throughout the last five years.
鈥淲e have waited so long to tell our story, have our validation and have our justice鈥 Knowing that no other woman will ever be in danger of the Jaz brothers was my purpose.鈥
The woman told the court that her experience has made her rethink her career path.
She now wants to join the police.
鈥淚 want to protect and support anyone who finds themselves in my position,鈥 she said.
鈥淚t was never my fault I was targeted and preyed upon鈥 It was out of my control鈥
There are monsters out there.
鈥淚 want to fight for women, fight for them to be believed, fight for them to be safe in our cities and towns.鈥
Survivor Two: stupefied and indecently assaulted by Danny Jaz
The second woman to read her statement has also left Christchurch as a result of the offending.
鈥淲hen the offending happened, I remember feeling all sorts of emotions, feeling numb, shock was one, shocked that I couldn鈥檛 believe what had just happened,鈥 she said.
鈥淭o this day, I鈥檓 still struggling.鈥
She has suffered from depression and been on medication on and off since the attack.
鈥淭his process has been tough - mentally and physically draining鈥 The process has caused a lot of anxiety and stress,鈥 she said.
鈥淚鈥檝e moved well away from Christchurch. I felt like I was suffocating at the thought of seeing you or an associate.
鈥淭he offending against me has changed me. I struggle with it. I鈥檓 fearful and vigilant.
鈥淚 feel utterly sad for you.鈥

Survivor Three: Sophie Brown, stupefied and sexually violated by Danny Jaz
Brown told the court that her assault led to 鈥渟ome of the darkest days鈥 of her life and for a long time she feared being alone.
鈥淭he times when I couldn鈥檛 deceive myself into believing nothing had happened, I was filled with sadness, shame, embarrassment, fear, emptiness.
鈥淚 searched for constant distraction, which has even sometimes meant self-sabotaging my life to live in chaos in order to avoid the silence,鈥 she said.
鈥淵ou stole my fierce independence from听听stole my right to feel safe in my own mind from me. And you stole my right to autonomy over my own body away from me.鈥
Brown said Danny Jaz had destroyed how she saw herself in relationships with men.
鈥淧eople will still describe me as a person who is confident, tenacious, and strong willed, but when it comes to romance鈥 I become a timid pushover who fears that if I don鈥檛 please them, I鈥檓 not doing my job as a woman.
鈥淚 lack confidence, trust, and the safety of believing that I have control - there鈥檚 a few reasons that I鈥檓 exploring as to why this is, but your name is highlighted, underlined and in bold on the top of this list.
鈥淵ou鈥檝e made it difficult for me to trust men, to form meaningful connections and enjoy the happiness I deserve of loving healthy relationships.鈥
Brown acknowledged Danny Jaz had a young daughter and turned to him to deliver powerful words.
鈥淪he鈥檒l be 19 one day, and you鈥檝e made sure that she continues to live in a world where women are exploited,鈥 she said.
鈥淪he continues to live in a world full of men like you who believe women owe you the privilege of access to their own bodies, irrespective of whether she wants to or not.
鈥淪he continues to live in a world where the chances of her encountering a man like you are one in four.鈥
Brown said she felt bad that Danny Jaz would go to prison, but was 鈥渨orking on that鈥.
鈥淥ne day I won鈥檛 feel bad,鈥 she said.
鈥淥ne day I won鈥檛 feel an ounce of shame or responsibility for what you did to me.
鈥淵ou and only you decided that my body was yours for the taking. I鈥檒l continuously work to shift the shading back onto you.鈥
While Brown still struggled with her attack, she refused to let Danny Jaz ruin her life.
鈥淒on鈥檛 assume you鈥檙e anything more than worthless,鈥 she told him.
鈥淚鈥檓 still a confident tenacious and strong woman who will continue to rise miles above you because I deserve a happy and meaningful life - the opposite of what you deserve.鈥
Survivor Four: stupefied by Danny Jaz
鈥淭his has made me feel so vulnerable,鈥 she said
鈥淚鈥檝e often taken pride in the fact that I鈥檝e never taken recreational drugs. That has always been my personal choice to never take them. I was so deeply disappointed this choice was taken without my permission.
鈥淭his has been very frightening for me. This has caused me a significant amount of stress by the loss of power over my body.
鈥淭he feeling of injustice, indescribable.鈥
She recalled the night she was drugged and said she was still traumatised by it.
鈥淚 felt very confused and disorientated... It was incredibly frightening. I felt unsafe.
鈥淚 thought I was going to collapse.
She said she had 鈥渕any flashbacks鈥 and felt 鈥渟o overwhelmed鈥.
鈥淚t has been extremely difficult for the past five years,鈥 she said.
" And it鈥檚 taken a significant amount of courage to come forward.鈥

Survivor Five: stupefied by the Jaz brothers
鈥淚 am sharing my Victim Impact Statement to shed light on the traumatic experience I endured and the profound impact it has had on my life which is difficult to put into words,鈥 she said.
鈥淚n the aftermath of the events, I experienced immense mental disarray and emotional distress.
鈥淎t the time I was living alone and felt isolated and terrified, grappling with intrusive thoughts and panic attacks for a prolonged period. Eating and sleeping became challenging and my mental health deteriorated to the point where the police were called to my residence due to concerns for my well-being.
鈥淲hen I finally confided in someone close to me about what had happened, they dismissed my experience and placed blame on me, intensifying my feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment.
鈥淭his narrative that it was my fault consumed me and hindered my ability to move forward to protect myself from the pain associated with the trauma.鈥
She did not realise the severity of what happened to her until she went to police three years later.
鈥淚 began to fully comprehend鈥 I allowed myself to acknowledge that I was groomed and drugged with intent,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 realised that I was completely taken advantage of and that the blame does not belong with me.鈥
She said she suffered panic attacks that left her feeling 鈥渟uffocated and unable to breathe鈥.
鈥淭he long-term impact on my mental health and well-being has been severe.
鈥淚 am sceptical and fearful of others frequently, hypervigilant about my surroundings and the people I encounter.
鈥淚 have a general lack of trust and often feel unsafe, which has had a long-term effect on my ability to grow and maintain relationships with others.鈥
Survivor Six: stupefied by the Jaz brothers, indecently assaulted by Danny Jaz
鈥淭his experience has made me question everything that I thought I knew,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 feel apprehensive and on edge. When there are males around me I am constantly checking to ensure no one is standing too close so that they could drive more drugs.
鈥淚 feel I鈥檓 hypervigilant now鈥 this is not only extremely tiring but also has taken the joy and happiness I used to experience in socialising with my friends.
鈥淚 question every situation I鈥檓 in and try and ensure that I am never caught in this kind of situation.鈥
The woman told the court she had never taken drugs and was gutted that the choice had been taken from her by the Jaz brothers.
鈥淲hat was done to me was not only a cowardly act, but it also took away my decision about what I want to do myself.
鈥淒anny, you made me feel听听made me feel uncomfortable around men I don鈥檛 know and I question every man.
鈥淵ou made me feel stupid that I trusted you. I thought that you were a normal nice guy, but you took advantage of that.
鈥淵ou made me feel scared to be a female with your intentions and actions.鈥

Survivor Seven: Katherine - drugged and indecently assaulted by Roberto Jaz
This survivor was one of the women who sparked the police investigation into the Jaz brothers.
The Herald has used the pseudonym Katherine for her during the court process.
She and听
鈥淚t is extremely difficult for me to describe to you what I think and what I feel towards what you鈥檝e done,鈥 Katherine said.
She explained that she started working for the Jaz family at one of their hospitality venues when she was 15.
She trusted the Jaz brothers and said she felt 鈥渃onfident and comfortable鈥 - moving into more hours of employment each week as she got older.
鈥淚 was supposed to be safe around you, but your intentions were distorted,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 had no reason not to trust you. I did nothing wrong.鈥
She said the trauma of the night of the attack was only the beginning of her ordeal.
She has had to relive the experience repeatedly during the police investigation and court process.
鈥淧hysically I suffered bruises, bite marks and pain. These were initial reminders of what you did,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 was sick, confused and scared鈥 The thought of no one believing me terrified me.鈥
Katherine said she blamed herself for what happened - and for what happened to her friend.
Roberto Jaz lured them to Venuti from Mama Hooch and offered them MDMA.
But the women believe it was a different and much stronger substance and it rendered them incapable of moving, talking and even seeing at points.
While they were stupefied Roberto Jaz physically and sexually assaulted them.
They were 18 years old.
鈥淲hat you did set an example, a twisted perception of what nightlife can be,鈥 Katherine told her attacker.
鈥淵ou implanted a fear in me鈥 I lived in fear of seeing you鈥 I went through a phase of paranoia.鈥
She said it was a relief that the Jaz brothers鈥 crimes were now public and their name suppression was no longer in place.
鈥淚 suffered intense feelings of not being understood,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 felt isolated, I secluded myself after what happened, I shut up from everything and everyone.
鈥淭hree months later, it had been made known to me that it wasn鈥檛 just Penny and I - you and your brother did this to dozens of other innocent women.
鈥淚 became distraught, angry, deranged鈥 I felt helpless鈥 as more brave women came forward, which uncovered the horrific extent of you and your brother鈥檚 disturbing offending.
鈥淵ou chose to harm hundreds of people who have been affected, not just one.
鈥淲hat you did to me and to all the, all the other survivors will stay with me for life.鈥
Katherine said she had become more compassionate, patient and stronger as a result of her trauma.
鈥淢y focus is not on you but me,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 can never take back what you did and it is only fair for your sentence to reflect that and to hold you to account.鈥

Survivor Eight: drugged and indecently assaulted by Roberto Jaz
鈥淭he event was 2018, 3 days after my 18th birthday, I was targeted by a predator,鈥 said Penny after her friend finished giving her statement.
鈥淲hat this man did to me was violent.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a disgusting act performed on a young, helpless teenage girl who was unable to consent that night.
鈥淗e took my innocence when he decided to violate my innocent young body.鈥
Penny said her trauma was intensified because she had to watch her friend get assaulted - powerless to stop what was happening.
鈥淗e knew that the drug would incapacitate us so he could do whatever he wanted to us - getting his twisted sexual pleasures and violent pleasures out of us,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 still have some memory of the events - it鈥檚 affected me so greatly, it haunts me every day, but over the years, I鈥檝e been learning how to cope.
鈥淵ou left me feeling like a man will always hurt me. I always feel like I鈥檓 nothing - like that feeling I got when you left me laying on the floor or in the booth.鈥
She struggled with anxiety, depression, anger and alcohol issues since the attack.
鈥淎s a young adult, I should have been living my life with no stress or anxiety - certainly not going through this process.
鈥淵ou were still living your life for five years as I was trying to fight to bring justice.
鈥淭hese were not my best years, but some of my worst. I did not deserve that.鈥
She turned to Roberto Jaz and directed a powerful message at him.
鈥淣ow you have no power over me,鈥 she said.
鈥淲ho will you become now, apart from a serial sex offender with your name out there for the crimes that you have committed.
鈥淜nowing that is a liberating feeling for us, all that stand against you.鈥
鈥淚 feel that even though this is the worst thing that has ever happened and I know it wasn鈥檛 in the plan for me to come that night - I am somewhat reassured that I did because that was your downfall.
鈥淭hat was the biggest mistake you鈥檝e ever made because you let me come down to the restaurant right? Because I was there for Katherine and she was there for me.
鈥淲e were each other鈥檚 strength.鈥
Survivor Nine: drugged, raped, assaulted and filmed by the Jaz brothers
I was 21 years old. I had just graduated... I was excited about the future,鈥 she said.
She was working at Mama Hooch and another bar to save as much money as she could for an overseas trip when she was raped.
鈥淚 was an outgoing person with an openness to meeting new people, visiting new places and an eagerness to create and establish an independent lifestyle.
鈥淚n April 2017, my whole world changed the day before I left (New Zealand).
鈥淚 was drugged, raped, violated and filmed by two men who I considered to be my employers.
鈥淎fter the assault, I was left with bruising all over my chest, breasts and thighs and I had a large cut on my lips.
鈥淓very time I got into the shower or changed clothes and looked down at my body, I was reminded of the night that you chose to take my autonomy away from me.
鈥淚 remember getting in the shower the next day and scrubbing my skin hoping that the repulsive feeling I could wash away.
鈥淚 found myself left with emotional injuries that would only increase in severity.
鈥淭he longer the time went on, my body didn鈥檛 feel like mine anymore. I went from somebody who liked who I was to someone who was repulsed with what I saw in the mirror.
鈥淚 became so sickened by taking my clothes off and washing my body in the shower that I would avoid showering for as long as I could so I didn鈥檛 have to look at myself and be reminded of how exposed and vulnerable you left me that night.鈥
She said when she came back to Christchurch after her overseas trip her behaviour was extremely unsafe.
鈥淚 became reckless to the point I didn鈥檛 care what happened to me anymore. I became the shell of my former self and I was dismissive towards the people that cared about me the most because I no longer trusted anyone.
鈥淚 can鈥檛 count the number of sleepless nights that I had when I heard noises in my home, and I was paranoid thinking it could have been one of you... I was so scared.
鈥淚 ended up sobbing uncontrollably on the floor of my hallway because I felt like I was losing my mind.
鈥淚t got so bad that I contemplated taking my life more than once and started thinking of the least painful ways to go.鈥
She got professional help and was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression and anxiety.
She could not work for 18 months due to her fragile mental health.
She constantly looked over her shoulder when she was away from home, terrified she would see one of the Jaz brothers.
鈥淓very time I saw a similar model of car that I associated with your family, I鈥檇 freeze and have to double check it wasn鈥檛 one of you,鈥 she said.
The woman said the trial was a harrowing process for her.
鈥淚 came here knowing that my integrity would be questioned during the trials of what you did,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 thought you looked at me as an employee who worked for your family business, but I was never anything to you but an opportunity... you betrayed my trust and used your power dynamic to drug me so you could take whatever you wanted from me with no consequences.
鈥淲hen you got me in my most vulnerable state, you not only raped me, you filmed it and then lied about having the video - you lied about all of it, which meant that myself and others had to go through a five year process of being retraumatised... and having to listen to 11 pages of someone reading the transcript of me being raped on a film.鈥
She said the sex offending siblings had harmed her 鈥減hysically, emotionally, psychologically鈥 and 鈥渞obbed鈥 her financially.
They also took her right to self-love and her trust in people.
鈥淵ou took away my trust and you took away my right to live as a young carefree woman without fear,鈥 she said.
鈥淚 had to leave cities because I was so scared of you.
鈥淭hen I moved countries for a year because of my mental health.

鈥淎fter the incident, I broke the hearts of my mother, my father, my brothers, my friends in telling them what you did to me - and not once have you taken any accountability for what you鈥檝e done.
鈥楤ut I need to make it very clear that despite all of this, you didn鈥檛 take anything from me that I haven鈥檛 recovered from in great strides.
鈥淚 have regained so much after what you did. I have retaught myself to love and feel love. I worked hard to get a career that I adore that revolves around healing, advocating for and protecting people.
鈥淚 have built an incredibly strong relationship with my family through all this and I鈥檓 working my way up the ranks in martial arts so I can protect myself and eventually help others do the same.
鈥淒espite my scars, I am so loved and supported... because of what you did I know that I will always have to work on myself and remind myself each day that I deserve love in all of its forms.
鈥淏ut I can finally say that I feel this dark cloud clearing.鈥
The woman thanked the police who she said 鈥渨orked countless hours fighting for justice, for myself and others鈥 and the Crown Prosecutors who 鈥渆nsure I felt as calm as possible in such an intimidating environment鈥.
鈥淭hey have worked incredibly hard to hold these men accountable,鈥 she said.
鈥淢y counsellor who has worked alongside me for years and helped me breathe 鈥 and accept the loss of my former self.鈥
She said she refused to let the assault define her.
鈥淭his incident will not be who I am - and my trauma is not who I am,鈥 she told the rapists.
鈥淵ou are not a part of who I am and you can鈥檛 make a difference anymore.
The court heard that a number of other women had written statements ahead of sentencing but did not want them read at the hearing.
Judge Mabey confirmed he had read them all in full.
Other victims did not want to provide statements.
Judge Mabey KC heard submissions from the Crown and defence on what the offenders sentence should be.
Crown Prosecutor Andrew McRae sought a term of 18 to 20 years in prison for each of the Jaz brothers.
He noted Judge Mabey KC鈥檚听
In the 169-page judgement, he said Danny and Roberto Jaz had an 鈥渁rrogant, entitled and hubristic approach鈥 to young women who came within their orbit and were 鈥渋ndifferent to their rights and indifferent to consent鈥.
鈥淒uring the conduct of their business at Mama Hooch hose women were seen as fair game - with the defendants being indifferent to consent and indifferent to the rights of the women, the brave survivors,鈥 McRae said.
鈥淭he Crown say that this is sustained predatory behaviour, where the defendants used their business premises, really as a way to target the vulnerable.
鈥淭hose patrons were entitled to the trust - for all intents and purposes - of the people that were running the bar, at any given time.
鈥楾hat trust was essentially destroyed for the defendant鈥檚 own self-interest.鈥

McRae said the offenders used social media messaging 鈥渁cross a, a wide friend group鈥 to 鈥渂rag about their exploits鈥.
鈥淚t essentially encouraged them to have greater and greater levels of brazenness in relation to their offending.
鈥淎nd that was completely without any consideration of the consent or of the willingness of their victims.鈥
He said the offending had 鈥渕ajor鈥 effects on each survivor.
鈥淎nd indeed, it was only through the courage of those survivors that the true scale of what had been going on at the bar and at, at the neighbouring restaurant... were brought to light,鈥 McRae told the court.
鈥淭he offending occurred over a relatively lengthy period of time... and even as we look at it today, five years on, there鈥檚 really no real appreciation from the defendants in terms of the effects of the offending upon those survivors upon those of those victims.
鈥淭here鈥檚 no real remorse. There鈥檚 no insight into the behaviours that actually caused the offending.鈥
Matthew Smit, the lawyer for Roberto Jaz, argued there was no need for a minimum period of imprisonment and urged the judge to take into consideration his client鈥檚 previous good character.
Danny Jaz鈥檚 lawyer Donald Matthews told the court that his client鈥檚 offending was 鈥渁 catastrophic fall from grace鈥.
Those who knew him personally had been 鈥渞ocked to the core鈥.
He said a number of people had written references about his 鈥減rior good character鈥.
Matthews said the fact people still supported his client showed that he was not an entirely bad person.
He described Danny Jaz as 鈥渁 very good father鈥 and said his children and partner would suffer deeply by his imprisonment.
Judge Mabey handed down his sentence just after 3.30pm.
The sentence - jail for callous, heartless, arrogant rapist brothers
Judge Mabey said Roberto Jaz offended against eight women and Danny Jaz was convicted of drugging and or violating 19 women.
In four cases the women and both men were involved in the offending.
The judge first spoke about the impact on the survivors.
鈥淵ou should both be a no doubt that you鈥檝e severely damaged all of your victims by your predatory and heartless offending, driven by arrogance, misguided self-belief, and a complete lack of respect for the rights of those you鈥檝e offended against, he said.
鈥淭he statements read in court and the ones that I have separately read have a similar theme - young women enjoying life are now even after so many years, anxious, fearful and having flashbacks, some have even had to leave Christchurch.
鈥淭he consistent theme was the darkness.鈥
He said the damage 鈥渋nfiltrates鈥 beyond the women - to their closest family and friends.
鈥淵ou have seen first-hand now what you鈥檝e done,鈥 said the judge.
鈥淎nd although neither of you has expressed any remorse or empathy or understanding or feelings - perhaps what you鈥檝e observed today has hit home in some way. And I hope for your sake it has.鈥
The court heard that Danny Jaz refused to engage with pre-sentence report writers.
Engaging with the writers is not mandatory.
鈥淩oberto Jaz made it clear he does not accept my verdicts - and chose not to discuss any of the offending,鈥 said Judge Mabey.
鈥淣either of you showed any remorse.鈥
He said the report on Roberto Jaz showed clearly that he was a predatory offender who planned his attacks to some degree.
鈥淵our messaging made clear of your intention towards staff and patrons,鈥 the judge said.
鈥淵ou knew of the drugs associated with sexual offending and you had those drugs, you bragged about using them.
鈥淏oth of you demonstrated through your words and your actions, the callous and predatory disregard for the young women you offended against.鈥
Roberto Jaz denied when interviewed that alcohol consumption or the use of recreational drugs interfered with his decision-making.
Further, he claimed to 鈥渞espect women鈥.
鈥淵ou said you were brought up to respect people and treat them well,鈥 said Judge Mabey.
鈥淭hat may be your view of yourself - but it is a misguided view.
鈥淵ou showed no respect to the woman who drugged and offended against over a 3.5-year period.
鈥淚f you genuinely consider yourself as someone who respects and treats people well, you will need considerable rehabilitation to bring yourself to the reality of your own character.
鈥淵our denial of your offending and your denial of your motivation is as misguided鈥 you lie, you minimise, you demonstrated that arrogant belief that you could talk your way out of anything.鈥
He said Roberto鈥檚 continued explanation that any sexual activity was 鈥渃onsensual鈥 was 鈥渁 fantasy鈥.
鈥淚t was an astounding demonstration of the hubris entitlement which ultimately led to your downfall.鈥
Judge Mabey said the men 鈥渉eartlessly exploited鈥 their victims.
He said while letters of support had been provided to the court from a number of people stating the brothers were 鈥渇ine-hearted, decent and respectful people鈥 - he was unconvinced.
鈥淵ou are not men of good character - you are sexual predators,鈥 he said
Members of the public gallery applauded and cheered when the judge delivered that comment.
Judge Mabey said the report on Roberto Jaz gave a deep insight into his offending.
鈥淧erhaps misogynistic attitudes and the patriarchal approach to life within your family may have engendered a new, an unhealthy attitude to women,鈥 he said.
鈥淵ou make conscious decisions to exploit and abuse your victims鈥 You were men in your 30s鈥 what occurred was a continuous course of conduct over a period of 3.5 years.鈥
Judge Mabey said an example of the planning that went into the offending was the rape of the Jaz brothers鈥 former employee.
鈥淵our sexual interest in her was demonstrated on the day she commenced employment with you and it was a year later鈥 that you both decided that she would be exploited for sexual purposes,鈥 he said.
鈥淪he was vulnerable - as were all of your victims who were drugged for sexual purposes.
鈥淪tupefication鈥uaranteed their vulnerabilities.
鈥淭here were other aspects of their vulnerability. They were young women, many were teenagers still growing up and working out how the world works.
鈥淵ou could not care less.鈥
The sentencing exercise was complex given the number of victims.
Each brother was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for each violation, to be served concurrently.
Judge Mabey set a net starting point of 18 years in jail for Roberto Jaz.
鈥淎nything less than 18 years would not do justice,鈥 he said.
For Danny Jaz the judge also set a starting point of 18 years.
He said the older sibling鈥檚 offences - away from the rape - were not as serious as what Roberto Jaz did.
But in Danny Jaz鈥檚 case there were more victims, more charges and he was 鈥渕ore active鈥 and 鈥渕ore determined鈥 in his offending.
鈥淵our actions towards all of your victims were predatory - you were ready for the opportunity to drug patrons and then boldly and brazenly positioned yourself, having observed them, so you were alone with them,鈥 Judge Mabey said.
He said not all of Danny Jaz鈥檚 assaults were 鈥渆gregious鈥 but were 鈥渇acilitated by drugging which resulted in disablement鈥.
鈥淭hat is a particularly aggravating factor as it guarantees vulnerability - these young women simply could not fight back,鈥 he said.
Judge Mabey said there was little credit he could give to reduce the starting points
However he could not deny the men a small reduction for guilty pleas entered and 鈥減revious good character鈥 before they started offending.
鈥淚t was not long after Mama Hooch opened that your offending commenced,鈥 he said.
He sentenced Roberto Jaz to 17 years in prison and Danny Jaz to 16 years and six months.
Operation Sinatra: the unravelling of the Mama Hooch rapists
The drugging and assaults took place at Mama Hooch and Venuti - a bar and restaurant owned by their father Michael Jaz, between 2015 and 2018.
Danny Jaz was a duty bar manager at Mama Hooch and Roberto Jaz was the chef at Venuti.
Both venues have been shut down since the men were charged.
Their downfall came after two 18-year-old women went to the police and reported they had been drugged and sexually assaulted at Venuti by Roberto Jaz.
The complaint led to dozens more women coming forward and a major police investigation dubbed Operation Sinatra.
The Jaz brothers were arrested and charged in 2018 and went on trial in February this year.
They had elected trial by jury but three days before the process was set to begin they changed their position and sought trial by Judge Mabey alone.
Two other men were charged alongside the Jaz brothers. One was acquitted on all sex and drug charges except one of offering to supply a Class B drug. He was discharged without conviction. The other was acquitted on a single sexual assault charge.
In July Judge Mabey released a 162-page judgment with the reason for each verdict.
Throughout, he lambasts the predatory brothers saying they had a consistent and established propensity to 鈥渟how a sexual interest in, and to target for sexual purposes, patrons and staff of Mama Hooch鈥.
Further, the siblings had an 鈥渁rrogant, entitled and hubristic approach鈥 to young women who came within their orbit and were 鈥渋ndifferent to their rights and indifferent to consent鈥.
He said Roberto Jaz used Venuti 鈥渁s a venue for sexual contact, both consensual and non-consensual鈥 and 鈥渁s a place to drug females and offend against them without their consent or any possible reasonable belief in consent鈥.
Roberto Jaz had a 鈥渨illingness to exploit females as playthings who exist for his benefit and whose rights for which he has complete disregard鈥, said the Judge.
听then 鈥減ositioned himself in a way that enabled him to take the complainant into a toilet cubicle and commit a sexual assault.
鈥淗e not only administered the drink for that purpose, he monitored her until such time as she and her friend had moved sufficiently forward in the queue to be entering the toilet when he went in with them and closed the door,鈥 he said of one assault Danny Jaz was convicted of.
鈥淚 consider this is an occasion similar to [another victim鈥檚 experience]. Danny Jaz has targeted [her] and has ensured that he ended up in the toilet with her. He sexually violated her.鈥
Following the trial,听
鈥淭hese guys knew they had a market and they just made them vulnerable - they treated them like rock stars,鈥 said Detective Inspector Scott Anderson.

Anderson said there was only one word to describe the Jaz brothers.
鈥淧redators. When you look at how the whole thing ran at Mama Hooch - it was total predatory behaviour.
鈥淭hey were living out some kind of fantasy鈥 they thought they could do whatever they liked with whoever fell in front of them.
鈥淚 really think their WhatsApp [and other group chats] was an unfiltered insight into how they lived their lives - an unfiltered look into their lives.
鈥淪ome people will say it鈥檚 鈥榖oys being boys鈥 or 鈥榣ocker room chat鈥 but it鈥檚 actually what happened and it ended with sexual offending.
鈥淚t was a real insight into how they mistreated and disrespected women.鈥
