The father of an聽infant who died suddenly in what police are treating as an 鈥渦nexplained鈥 death聽says he raised major concerns over the boy鈥檚 situation in the weeks leading up to the tragedy.

Michael Steele told聽child services聽that 2-month-old son Kevin Chen was 鈥渘ot safe鈥 and not in a suitable environment before he died.

Emergency services were called to a property in Oxford, North Canterbury 鈥 about 70km northwest of聽Christchurch聽鈥 on Monday.

Now, the devastated father is demanding answers from聽Oranga Tamariki, alleging that the Government agency has 鈥渂lood on its hands鈥.

Steele says little Kevin was 鈥渁 dear wee soul鈥.

He says his life has been a living hell over the past three days since learning of his sudden death.

Police are investigating but details have been scant, even after a post-mortem examination was completed yesterday, saying only that the death remains 鈥渦nexplained鈥.

Steele saw his son last week and although he said the child was 鈥渉appy... smiling away鈥, he believed he was 鈥渋n immediate danger鈥 due to the surroundings.

He was worried about the child鈥檚 situation.

In a series of messages sent to Oranga Tamariki staff 鈥 which have been seen by the聽Herald聽鈥 Steele outlines his concerns and fears.

鈥淜evin is not safe,鈥 said one message to a case worker.

鈥淵ou will see that for yourself... hopefully before disaster strikes and it will if nothing is done.

鈥淚 did everything I could.鈥

Steele, who is a deep-sea fishing captain, is now questioning why Oranga Tamariki did not intervene, saying that they now have 鈥渂lood on their hands鈥.

He says he does not know how the child died 鈥 but is desperate for some answers over what happened.

鈥淭here鈥檚 definitely some big holes in the system,鈥 Steele said.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a glitch in the system, especially when infants die.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so soul destroying, this whole story.鈥

In response to questions from the聽贬别谤补濒诲,听Oranga Tamariki DCE Tamariki and Wh膩nau Services Rachel Leota said they were 鈥渘otified of the death of a baby in Oxford鈥 on Monday.

鈥淲e are assisting police in trying to understand the circumstances that led to this,鈥 Leota said.

鈥淗owever, because this is a police-led investigation, we are unable to comment further at this time.鈥
