Warning: Contains details of sexual violence听
A new documentary about听the murder of British backpacker Grace Millane听and听the trial of her killer Jesse Kempson听will include previously unseen CCTV footage from the night she died.听 听
According to听The Hollywood Reporter, US-based film distributor Brainstorm Media has acquired the rights to听The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane,听set to release in cinemas and on streaming in spring 2024 in the US.听
The film, from British director Helena Coan, will include never-before-seen interviews and CCTV footage of Millane鈥檚 Tinder date with Kempson, during which he strangled her to death and left her body in a suitcase in the Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland.听
The 21-year-old backpacker鈥檚 death made headlines throughout the world as Kempson鈥檚 trial revealed his history of violence towards women.听
He was found guilty of murder in 2019 after presenting a 鈥渞ough sex鈥 defence in court, details of which her family was forced to listen to. Kempson was sentenced to 17 years鈥 imprisonment without parole.听
Coan says Kempson鈥檚 defence, which boiled down to 鈥渟he asked for it鈥, was the main reason she wanted to tell Millane鈥檚 story.听
鈥淚鈥檝e been in that position and probably every woman in the history of the world has been in that position, on a new date with someone that you don鈥檛 really know,鈥 she says.听
鈥淪he was just a normal young woman who absolutely didn鈥檛 deserve what was about to happen to her.鈥听
The rough sex defence can potentially result in a reduced sentence in some cases - which means 鈥渕en are getting away with the most heinous, manipulative, planned, pre-meditated crimes,鈥 Coan says.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 scary to see how lawyers use this defence and how juries still buy into this idea, that a woman can consent to being strangled to death.鈥听
But as it was pointed out during the court case, it takes up to 10 minutes to strangle someone to death.听
A new documentary will explore what happened the night Grace Millane died.听
鈥淭hat鈥檚 not pleasure. That鈥檚 murder.鈥听
The film was made with the blessing of Millane鈥檚 family and includes interviews with Detective Inspector Scott Beard, who was the lead investigator on the case.听
Beard told听Sky 九一星空无限听last year, 鈥淓ssentially the rough sex defence re-victimises that victim and their families - in a murder case, their families who are sitting in court.听
鈥淭he victim isn鈥檛 there to answer.鈥听
Sharing news of the film鈥檚 release on social media, Coan wrote, 鈥淚 have never worked harder, been more challenged and been forever changed like I have with this film.听
鈥淢aking a film about someone鈥檚 daughter, sister, friend is not a responsibility I take lightly.鈥听
The documentary is produced by Matthew Metcalfe, who is based in New Zealand and known for his work on听The Dead Lands听and the upcoming听Never Look Away, directed by Kiwi actress Lucy Lawless.听
It鈥檚 not clear if or when the documentary will be available to view in New Zealand.听
