The mother of Marokopa fugitive Tom Phillips says she is happy to see her grandchildren alive and well but wants her son to 鈥渃ome home鈥.
Footage emerged yesterday of the wanted dad and his three children, Jayda, 11, Maverick, 9, and Ember, 8, tramping in remote central North Island farmland, wearing camo gear and carrying large packs after a chance encounter with pig hunters.
Phillips鈥 mother Julia told the Herald she was happy to see her grandchildren.
鈥淲e were relieved to see the children alive and well.
鈥淲e thought they would be but you never know.鈥
She said she would 鈥渓ove for them to come home鈥.
The Te K奴iti-based grandmother said there had been no contact with Phillips or her grandchildren since 2021 despite rumours she was aiding her son.

Julia also said the police had asked her to make a public appeal asking for him to return the children but she 鈥渄idn鈥檛 see the point鈥.
Yesterday, the children鈥檚 mother Cat was emotional when she spoke to the Herald about getting proof her three children 鈥 whom she last saw in 2021 鈥 were alive and seemingly in good health.

The mother of the three missing Phillips children, Cat, is 'relieved' the youngsters are alive after seeing them in a video for the first time in almost three years.
She instantly recognised each child, captured briefly on a phone camera walking in single file along rugged farm terrain.
鈥淚鈥檓 so happy that they鈥檙e all there.

The encounter in Marokopa bush, which sparked a fresh police hunt for the fugitive father, included the children speaking to the hunters briefly, asking if 鈥渁nyone knew they were there鈥.
John McOviney said his 16-year-old grandchild was one of the pig hunters out on his farm on Thursday who came across the man and three children about 6.30pm.
He said they were all wearing masks and were only 20m from the hunters.
鈥淭he children asked: 鈥榃ho else knows we鈥檙e here?鈥
鈥淎nd then they just kept on walking. They were all packed up, they had big packs on. I think the father sort of kept them moving.鈥
He said there was a lot of bush on his farm and it was 鈥渜uite isolated鈥.
Speaking to 九一星空无限talk ZB, McOviney said when his grandson saw Phillips was carrying a gun they didn鈥檛 take the interaction any further, but he called 111 and spoke to police right away. The video footage was sent to police.
On Monday police said they had determined the most recent sighting of missing man Tom Phillips and his three children was 鈥渃redible鈥.
Police were dispatched on Thursday night after receiving a tip Phillips had been seen in bush west of Coutts Rd in Marokopa with the three children.
鈥淧atrols began in the area on Thursday night and a search was launched the following morning,鈥 Detective Inspector Andrew Saunders said.
Saunders said the sighting has opened 鈥渁 positive line of inquiry鈥 that is now being looked into by investigators.
鈥淲hile we cannot go into detail, we want to reassure the public that we have the resources in place to respond to any information or reports of sightings that come in.
鈥淥ur focus is very much on the safe return of Jayda, Maverick and Ember to their wh膩nau and we are doing all that we can to make that happen.鈥
