Several homes have been evacuated in Canterbury as a raging fire goes from bad to worse.

Flames have spread overnight with a wind change and conditions are dangerous for firefighters.

People in all homes above the Governor's Bay fire station and around Allendale have been made to leave.

Riwai Grace from the Fire Service communications centre says it's been a long and tiring night.
He said quite a few streets have been evacuated and many people are at the local fire station where they're safe.

He said they've had to put a lot of further resources into Governors Bay, and with the aid of police evacuate all the properties above the Governors Bay fire station and around Allendale.
Staff and equipment has been brought in from the likes of Diamond Harbour, Lyttelton, Rangiora, Woodend, Lincoln and Rolleston to protect properties.
Fire fighters are pinning hopes on helicopters that will be back in the air come daylight.
