Police believe a Southland hunter who died last night accidentally shot himself.
Gary Tall had been hunting with a friend in the Nevis Range in Central Otago when emergency services were called just before midnight.
They were unable to revive him.
Initial indications show the 61-year-old was alone when his gun discharged accidentally, catching him in the abdomen.
A post-mortem will be completed later today.
