David Nyika鈥檚 highly anticipated homecoming boxing match on September 14听delivered a knockout win against Tommy Karpency, while coverage of the event had some viewers stunned.

With nine fights on the card, last weekend鈥檚 event at Viaduct Events Centre drew packed tables and big names: sports stars听David Tua,听Ali Williams听and听Leon MacDonald听were there, alongside politicians听Winston Peters听and听Wayne Brown, who were seated next to听film legend Cliff Curtis.

Kiwi sports reporter Andrew Gourdie, formerly of听九一星空无限hub, was part of the broadcast team for sports streaming site DAZN, which beamed the fight to 155 countries.

The coverage included a chat with Curtis, microphones in hand and corporate tables behind them. Acknowledging the viewers around the world, Gourdie explains to 鈥渢hose of you who don鈥檛 know鈥 that the Hollywood star is 鈥渙ne of the actors here in New Zealand we鈥檙e very proud of鈥.

He then explains that Curtis is 鈥渕ost famous probably for playing Uncle Bully in听Once Were Warriors. He certainly put on a show out there tonight,鈥 Gourdie says, appearing to reference the hard-hitting nature of the boxing event.

鈥淵eah thanks for that. Right,鈥 Curtis says.

Curtis pauses. 鈥淪orry you just put me off there鈥 he explains. 鈥淭alking about bad spirits from the past,鈥 he appears to say, while Gourdie apologises. 鈥淪orry sir,鈥 the presenter says. 鈥淚 beg your pardon.鈥

The subject turns to the fight at hand. 鈥淭ell us a bit about what this boy鈥檚 future has in store for him,鈥 Gourdie says.

鈥淒ave Higgins has done a great job,鈥 Curtis says of the Kiwi boxing promoter and Duco co-founder. 鈥淒avid Nyika鈥檚 on the main stage.

鈥淎ll of that hard work, discipline, dedication paid off.鈥

The听Herald听reached out to Andrew Gourdie for comment.

Footage of the interview was shared by TikTok user @polareats and has since gone viral 鈥 it had 176,500 views by Monday morning 鈥 published with the caption 鈥渨hat not to do when you鈥檙e interviewing one of nz鈥檚 best actors鈥.

Among the hundreds of comments were many pointing out that Curtis 鈥渄oesn鈥檛 want to be known as Uncle Bully鈥 and 鈥渃learly hates鈥 still being recognised for the role.

Uncle Bully was the abusive, predatory antagonist of the 1994 film听Once Were Warriors.

Cliff Curtis, 56, was 25 when the film came out, and famously听never agreed to the role; his agent accepted it on his behalf while Curtis was away shooting in Rapa Nui (Easter Island).

It was a challenging character and narrative arc. In the years since its release, Curtis has spoken publicly about the job. 鈥淭hat was a role I didn鈥檛 want to do,鈥澨he told the听Herald听in 2014. 鈥淭hat dude is going to be haunting me for the rest of my days.鈥

To find a way into the infamous character, Curtis had 鈥渇ocused on the idea that that film was ultimately about the strength and beauty of our women who hold families together against enormous challenges鈥 and could do the role 鈥渂ecause ultimately, the kaupapa was greater than my individual aspirations鈥.

It swept the 1994 NZ Film Awards, winning nine awards including best film and director, and earned gongs on the international festival circuit.

A third of Kiwis were thought to have seen it.

Once Were Warriors听shocked audiences with its graphic content, and the film proved divisive, drawing criticism for portraying negative stereotypes while being considered an important contribution to local cinema.

The production 鈥渃ontributed significantly to highlighting the immense creativity, talent and ability within the M膩ori community鈥, wrote Dr Leonie Pihama, a leading kaupapa M膩ori academic, in听Film In Aotearoa New Zealand. 鈥淗owever, in terms of Maori representation to the world, its political and cultural implications are disturbing.鈥

NZ On Screen听reports it鈥檚 still the most-watched local release, and it鈥檚 consistently ranked in the听top Kiwi films of all time.
