Tauranga baker and barista Harriet Campbell is gearing up for another trip to Ukraine with her humanitarian project, Never Alone, to raise awareness of the ongoing war.
Since last December, she has made four trips to the war-torn country.
鈥淧lease don鈥檛 forget about what鈥檚 going on. I know it鈥檚 really easy, and especially in New Zealand, it鈥檚 so far away that sometimes you鈥檙e on another planet,鈥 said Campbell.
In helping those in Ukraine following the invasion by Russia on February 24, 2022, Campbell said she had found her purpose.
鈥淚 have now made four trips to Ukraine. I have volunteered in animal rescue, in multiple kitchens providing food for displaced civilians and soldiers, assembling first aid kits for frontline troops, at an aid station for injured soldiers, and in many other initiatives.鈥

That鈥檚 how Campbell met her partner, Jason Zan, another volunteer from the United States.
鈥淚n December 2024, we created the project, Never Alone,鈥 she said.
鈥淛ason and I cooked and delivered 2000 meals to the frontline villages, soldiers, and children鈥檚 centres.
鈥淭he response that we鈥檝e had from so many people has been quite overwhelming.

鈥淚t鈥檚 quite emotional to see that you can have such an impact with not a lot, just showing up and serving up some hot food and just showing them that they haven鈥檛 been forgotten.鈥
Campbell said the war is bleak.
鈥淪ometimes it feels hopeless. People are really tired. They just want to live again.鈥

She said the level of hope is still going strong, and people are working as hard as they were in the beginning.
鈥淥n one occasion, we were two kilometres from the line. It was very interesting. Just hearing artillery.鈥

Campbell said the sound of artillery didn鈥檛 stop the whole time they were there.
Another time, they were at a base close to the Russian border.
鈥淚t鈥檚 just under constant barrage, every single night of the attacks. The city was bombed every single night.鈥

鈥淣ow we are planning our return to continue the Never Alone project.鈥
The project is about showing the Ukrainian people they are not alone.
鈥淚t鈥檚 providing a little bit of hope and some hot meals, showing people that they haven鈥檛 been forgotten about.

鈥淩ight now, it feels more important than ever to show the Ukrainian people that they aren鈥檛 alone.鈥
The pair are now fundraising for their June departure. They require between $10,000 and $15,000 for travel costs.

鈥淭he food side of the project is very affordable. I can feed about 100 people for between $100-$150. That includes meat, cookies, bread. It鈥檚 a good meal.鈥

鈥淚 want people to remember that there are real lives that are being destroyed, there are still people there that are going through absolute hell.鈥
