Four people who were 鈥渁ccidentally鈥 locked in the Durie Hill Tower on Tuesday night had to be helped by the Fire Brigade.
Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Murray Dunbar said they were called out at 11.43pm and found the group had been locked in the Durie Hill Tower.
鈥淚 think they鈥檇 accidentally been locked in,鈥 Dunbar said.
鈥淚t was probably a bit traumatic for the people that got locked in there.鈥
Whanganui firefighters were called to the tower at 11.43pm on Tuesday.
Fire and Emergency Whanganui senior station officer Shane Dudley said firefighters called the security company to come and let out the people trapped in the tower.
Dunbar said two fire trucks from Whanganui Fire Station were sent to the incident.
鈥淚t was only about 15 minutes.
鈥淛ust long enough to know that someone was coming back to help them.鈥
He said the two fire trucks had left by 11.56pm.
Police said they attended after a report of people locked in a building on Durie Hill and referred any further queries to the Whanganui District Council.
A sign at the entrance to the tower says 鈥淭his tower will be closed at dusk every day. When the hooter is sounded, please vacate immediately鈥.
The council, which is responsible for the tower, has been contacted for comment.
