Family members of Hawke鈥檚 Bay teenager Ariki Rigby cried as the man accused of murdering her appeared in court this morning.听
The 32-year-old Auckland man, who has been charged with murder and arson, appeared in Manukau District Court before Justice Quentin Hix. He was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody.听
Rigby was killed in September 2022, about four weeks short of what would have been her 19th birthday, in a case that shocked the region and the country.听
Rigby鈥檚 family and supporters were in the public gallery. One family member cried loudly as the accused stood in the dock and yelled 鈥淛ustice for Ariki鈥 as he was taken back into the cells.听
Police charging sheets said the man lived in Favona and listed his occupation as orchard worker.听
Her badly beaten and burned body 鈥撎which her sister says had its hands and feet cut off听鈥 was discovered in a burned-out car in the carpark of a river reserve in Havelock North.听
Police initially put police tape over the car and left, thinking her body was that of a sheep.听
Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said Hawke鈥檚 Bay Police had on Tuesday arrested and charged an Auckland man with the murder of Rigby.听
鈥淧olice have conducted an extensive and painstaking investigation to ensure the person responsible for her murder can be held to account.鈥听
The accused 鈥 who was living in Hawke鈥檚 Bay at the time of Ariki鈥檚 death - was arrested in Favona yesterday and charged with murder and arson.听

Ariki Rigby鈥檚 family describe arrest as 鈥榞ood news鈥听
Rigby鈥檚 older sister Anaher膩 told the听Herald听it was too early to comment.听
She is currently dedicating her efforts to organising a function to celebrate her sister鈥檚 life to coincide with what would have been her 21st birthday in late September.听
Michael Ngahuka, a cousin of Rigby who has previously been the family鈥檚 official spokesman, said he did not know the full details around charges being laid in relation to Ariki鈥檚 death.听
He said that earlier today, in a Rigby family private online chat group, an aunty had written how some 鈥済ood news鈥 was likely to be shared this afternoon.听
Ngahuka - a pastor who is based in the Hastings suburb of Flaxmere - said he could not comment further ahead of tomorrow鈥檚 court appearance.听
Ngahuka - along with Anaher膩 - has previously made numerous appeals via the听New Zealand Herald听for those who knew who killed the teen to come forward.听
