Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown celebrated Christmas by responding to his online critics and admirers in a new video.

The mayor said he 鈥渟ifted through [his] comment section鈥 and found enough opinions 鈥渢o build a second harbour crossing out of sheer hot air鈥.

In the clip, Brown donned a Santa hat and read opinionated social media comments regarding his mayoralty while sitting on a leather chair in a decorated living room with a picture of Stephen Joyce nearby.

Brown prefaced the video by saying he was 鈥渢alked into doing this鈥 against his better judgement and pointed out his achievements, including the lowest rates rise in the country and the new Karanga Plaza pool, before reading his first comment.

鈥淵ou are a complete disappointment,鈥 he reads.

鈥淲ell, you鈥檙e a bit of a d***, mate.鈥

A Reddit user asked, 鈥淗ow many days can Wayne Brown go without saying something stupid?鈥 to which he responded, 鈥淚 think you meant, 鈥楬ow many days can I go without listening for somebody stupid, which is you, James鈥.鈥

One Facebook user dubbed him 鈥渕ayor 鈥檅ack door鈥 Brown鈥 and said he had no business acumen.

鈥淚 haven鈥檛 got much business acumen. I turned down what I was earning to come in as mayor and rescue drongos like you,鈥 Brown replied.

Not all comments were negative. One praising Auckland Transport鈥檚 new initiative to cap weekly fares at $50 earned a quick 鈥済ood on you鈥, while a user named Tammy asked Brown to be Wellington鈥檚 mayor for 鈥渆ven one day a week鈥.

鈥淚鈥檓 sorry, Tammy 鈥 if you鈥檙e in Wellington, your best chance is to leave,鈥 was Brown鈥檚 response.

At the end of the clip, the mayor said he didn鈥檛 realise there were 鈥渟o many idiots wasting their time鈥 and wished viewers happy holidays before saying he was off for a beer.

In a Facebook post, Brown said, 鈥淟et鈥檚 end 2024 with a chuckle and a reminder that democracy isn鈥檛 always polite, but it鈥檚 never boring.鈥

Brown also posted a photo of himself carrying a paddleboard for Christmas with the caption, 鈥淒on鈥檛 do anything dumb while I鈥檓 gone.鈥

Earlier this week, the Herald reported Brown is expected to seek a second term as Auckland鈥檚 mayor after a poll showed he went from being deeply unpopular to a hit with voters.

Sources inside the Brown camp told the Herald the mayor plans to stand again and policy work is under way.

An August poll conducted by Curia canvassing a range of council issues showed a net satisfaction of 25%-plus for Brown, with 42% of the respondents saying he was doing a good or very good job. Just 17% of respondents thought Brown was doing a poor or very poor job. The rest thought he was doing an average job or were unsure.

In a statement, Brown said he plans to get through the festive season before thinking about next year.
