  • Thunderstorms rolled across Auckland early this morning, with residents reporting power cuts, shaking houses and terrified pets.
  • There were 750 lightning strikes in Auckland as the 鈥渃onga line鈥 of thunderstorms was pushed into the city by Cyclone Tam, MetService says.
  • Residents described the thunderstorms as the worst they鈥檇 experienced in the city.

Power outages, shaking houses, blaring car alarms, terrified pets and baked beans at 1am 鈥 it was a wild night for thousands as thunder and lightning crashed and flashed across New Zealand鈥檚 biggest city early this morning.

There were 750 lightning strikes across Auckland between about midnight and 4.30am, MetService confirmed, in a late flick from Cyclone Tam that pushed a 鈥渃onga line鈥 of thunderstorms over the city.

鈥淩ight, why have I been woken up by a biblical storm?鈥 an English holidaymaker asked on Reddit鈥檚 Auckland subreddit at 1am.

鈥淚 have no idea if this is normal, but is everyone else awake?鈥

They were.

One described the sound of the storm as 鈥渓ike a truck falling on my house鈥, another wrote that 鈥渕y house is going to fly away soon, I鈥檓 sure of it鈥.

鈥淚 find it weird that for the last 3hrs, the weather has been a metric f*** tonne worse than the actual cyclone lol鈥, wrote one city resident of the early-morning sleep-stealer.

鈥淭hese thunder slaps are godlike.鈥

Several posted that the thunderstorms were the worst they鈥檇 experienced living in Auckland, including one who has notched up almost half a century in the city.

鈥淚鈥檝e lived here most of my 50 years and that is one of the loudest, longest storms I鈥檝e heard.鈥

Some took to comfort food after the unexpectedly early start to the day, including baked beans, salami sandwiches, pumpkin soup and 鈥渃hicken and cheesy toast鈥.

鈥淚鈥檓 actually just a bit annoyed because I鈥檝e been woken up by a villainous thunderclap, and now I鈥檓 eating baked beans at nearly one in the morning鈥, one wrote on Reddit.

Pets were also unimpressed, among them a 鈥渄eaf as a post鈥 dog and a cat that 鈥渃ame flying in at 100mph looking crazed鈥, but still managed a pitstop at his dinner bowl.

鈥淵eah that鈥檚 some hard-out thunder and lightning! Can鈥檛 say my house has ever been shaken quite so violently by thunder before. Epic. Terrified my dog. And he鈥檚 deaf as a post.鈥

Then, after all the rattling, flashing and booming, tranquility.

鈥淎nd now, all of a sudden it鈥檚 completely still and quiet鈥, a Reddit user wrote after the worst passed.

鈥淚 was loving the chaos 鈥 watched the lightning earlier and it was f***ing magical.鈥
