After months of negotiations between the Far North District Council and local iwi, the planned Opua Marina extension in the Bay of Islands will now go ahead.
Far North Holdings and the Karetu Maori Committee have signed a memorandum of understanding to protect the Taumarere River where the marina sits.
Karetu Maori Committee spokesman Arapeta Hamilton says the understanding is a win win.
He says they wanted to ensure the river is passed to the next generation in a better state.
