Big crowds are expected to pour in to Whangamata today ahead of tonight's New Year's Eve celebrations.
The Coromandel town has long been a New Year hot spot for holidaymakers.
But local newspaper editor Lesley Staniland said in recent years public alcohol bans and a boost in organised events have helped curtail drunken mischief.
"From today, for the next week or so we're going to see the big crowds again. It's been really busy over Christmas and New Year but I still think it's bee down a wee bit."
Fat Freddy's Drop cancelled its New Year's Eve show at the Whangamata Big Top, but Lesley Staniland says revelers can enjoy a free party in Williamson Reserve.
She acknowledged the increase in events such as free concerts, harbour swims and markets keep people entertained.
Ms Staniland said teenagers used to get bored and cause trouble, but there's still plenty to attract the young crowd.
"There's different activities in the surfing and the swimming and the wharf jumping, which is actually allowed now - it's legal - and everyone just loves to do that. It's a great way to cool off."
