The Capital Connection is losing its buffet carriage as its future remains unclear.
KiwiRail will remove the buffet car from Monday week on the Wellington - Palmerston North service, as it's due for significant maintenance.
But, given the work is expected to cost $130,000, and no decision has been made about the long-term future of the Capital Connection service, the work is being deferred.
Spokesman Gavin Rutherford says he appreciates this will be an inconvenience for passengers, and they're looking at ways in which some refreshments can still be served.
The buffet car also provides disabled access to the train, so one of the existing carriages will need to be re-configured so those using wheelchairs can safely board and exit.
