The first permanently-staffed fire station to be rebuilt post-quake is being officially opened today in Spreydon.

It's part of the $50 million Greater Christchurch Rebuild programme to renew, repair, and rebuild 12 Christchurch fire stations following the 2011 quake.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand's Assistant Area Commander Metro Steve Kennedy says a lot of their stations took a hammering during the quakes.

"A lot of our crews have been working in temporary stations or damaged stations that actually had some structural reinforcing to keep them operating for the last seven years. So while it's been quite some time in the planning, it's certainly a milestone."

The news is being welcomed by the local community, who Kennedy says were pleased to see crews move back in.

"It gives them a lot of security down through that area as well knowing that they've got crews available in a short time period."

The new $5.6 million station has two appliance bays, accommodation for six firefighters, a gym, de-contamination wash and storage facilities, a vehicle fume management system and a meeting room.

Crews have occupied the station since October.
