A destructive fire ripped through Louise and Taylah Eder鈥檚 home, robbing them of their belongings and beloved pet dogs 鈥 and now they face the daunting task of piecing their lives back together.听
The听Canterbury听house fire has been described by听Fire and Emergency听(Fenz) staff as 鈥渙ne in a million鈥.听
Specialist fire investigator Mitchell Jeffrey said the most probable cause was sunlight hitting a magnified makeup mirror, reflecting onto a couch and causing it to ignite.听
鈥淚 would just like to remind people to keep magnifying mirrors out of sunlight, it is rare, but it is one of these things that do happen,鈥 Jeffrey said.听
Taylah and her mother Louise were out working on July 24 when they found out their Swannanoa home was engulfed in flames.听
Louise and Taylah Eder were out when they were told their Canterbury home had been destroyed.听
Taylah told the听Herald听the harrowing events of that day.听
鈥淚 missed a call from mum in the middle of the day, which is a bit odd, because she works during the day and can鈥檛 have the phone on her,鈥 Taylah said.听
鈥淎s soon as I saw her call, I knew something was wrong. She just said, 鈥榯he house is on fire鈥.听
鈥淚 immediately thought of the dogs, they were inside.鈥听
Taylah arrived at her house to see a cluster of firefighters and her mum, holding their two dogs, Beau and Bel.听
Both of them died as a result of the fire.听
The Eder's dogs, Beau and Bel, both died in the house fire on July 24.听
鈥淚 saw the house and looked at them and just collapsed to the ground,鈥 Taylah said.听
A Fenz spokesman said 25 crew members were working on the scene at the height of the blaze.听
鈥淐rews entered the cottage to find two dogs,鈥 he said.听
鈥淪ignificant attempts were made to revive the animals but they were unsuccessful.鈥听
Louise鈥檚 partner, Scott, and a group of their close friends were there, doing everything they could to help.听
鈥淭hey鈥檙e just the best people on earth, we鈥檙e so lucky,鈥 said Taylah.听
The next day, Louise and Taylah returned to the house to salvage what they could.听
鈥淲e managed to grab a few precious things, like jewellery and dog collars 鈥 not everything was destroyed but it鈥檚 more a matter of if things are even salvageable,鈥 she said.听
Despite losing so much, Taylah and her mother are grateful it wasn鈥檛 any worse.听
鈥淚 guess at the end of the day, things are just things 鈥 but I just want to remind people to hug their dogs,鈥 she said.听
Bel died as a result of the blaze at the Eders' home in Swannanoa on July 24.听
鈥淭hey were a part of the family.听
鈥淲e鈥檙e very thankful that none of us were inside 鈥 my sister, usually we all have dinner on a Wednesday, and she鈥檚 usually at the house 鈥 so she could have very well been inside and been asleep.鈥听
A听听set up by Taylah鈥檚 friend Lily Toulson was launched to help the family recoup their losses.听
Taylah Eder says their dogs Beau (pictured) and Bel were a part of the family.听
鈥淚 was just devastated for them, I cried 鈥 they have been through so much these past few years,鈥 Toulson said.听
鈥淪tarting the Givealittle was the very least I could do.鈥听
In less than 24 hours, the page had raised more than $8000.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 honestly just a reflection of them, because they鈥檙e the most beautiful people, you know. They would do anything for anyone,鈥 Toulson said.听
鈥淭hey just have this natural gift of making anyone feel welcome. I鈥檓 so grateful that people have been able to give what they can.听
鈥淲hen I posted it, I said it鈥檚 a koha. Koha means whatever you have, there鈥檚 no set amount. It鈥檚 just what you can give,鈥 she said.听
Taylah and Louise aren鈥檛 accustomed to being on the receiving end of generosity.听
鈥淚 guess it hasn鈥檛 sunk in what鈥檚 happened, and that we really do need this help,鈥 Taylah said.听
鈥淲e鈥檙e just trying to remind ourselves that we鈥檇 do the same for our friends in this situation.鈥听
An investigation into the fire is under way.听
