Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki鈥檚 father Duke Walter Tamaki has died.

The controversial church leader paid tribute to his 鈥渂eloved dad鈥 in a brief 鈥渇arewell to a mighty man鈥 on social media this morning.

Tamaki shared details of Duke Tamaki鈥檚 funeral arrangements: He will lie at Destiny Church Auckland until Friday when he will be taken to Te Kopua Marae in Te Awamutu.

鈥淎ll are welcome to pay their respects鈥 at Destiny Church Auckland, Tamaki said.

It comes amid a week of increased attention on Tamaki after members of his Destiny Church groups Man Up and Legacy led a violent protest at a children鈥檚 event at Te Atat奴 library.

Tamaki鈥檚 followers also disrupted the Auckland Rainbow Parade on Ponsonby Rd, with both incidents raising concerns about his church鈥檚 charitable status and condemnation from community leaders for 鈥渃rossing the line鈥 and 鈥渢huggery鈥.

In a sermon after the protests, Tamaki explained why he was not present, saying he was spending time with his dying father.

鈥淢y dad, at this stage, is maybe going through the last days of his life.

鈥淚 needed to be there. We had lots of visitors over this time, mostly family.

鈥淢y sister Caroline ... she looks after my dad.

鈥淚t was the doctors who phoned my sisters, and said, 鈥榃e鈥檝e done a blood test, and everything says everything鈥檚 shutting down'.

鈥淭he doctor鈥檚 advice was ... well that he was going to die that afternoon, so we got hold of the family. God鈥檚 got a way of doing things.鈥

But Tamaki said his father had perked up with his family around him.

鈥淎ll of the kids, their children, the Australian crew, my grandchildren are coming from there. The more people come, the more he starts to smile,鈥 Tamaki said.

鈥淭he more he perks up - he woke up the morning doctors said he was supposed to be dead by and said, 鈥極h, I think I鈥檒l have bacon and eggs for breakfast'.

鈥淗e鈥檚 90 years old, and if you鈥檙e a health buff or you want to interview him [about] how to have a long life - don鈥檛 interview my father. He eats sugar by the tonnes, salt by the tonnes, fat or meat by the tonnes, bread by the tonnes, and butter that thick.鈥
