An Auckland Council boss is blasting protesters and their church leader for verbal and physical attacks on youngsters and families caught up in a 鈥渧iolent and ugly situation鈥 at a city library.

Violence broke out at a community event on Saturday when Brian Tamaki鈥檚 Destiny Church members  hosted by a drag artist.

Police confirmed they were investigating allegations of assault after about 50 people entered the building and refused to leave, with a .

Tamaki later posted praise for the disruptive and violent actions of his followers.

Chief executive Phil Wilson today condemned the weekend鈥檚 events in an opinion piece for Our Auckland, saying staff were targeted in Saturday鈥檚 protest both verbally and physically which was 鈥渘ot good enough and not acceptable鈥.

鈥淥ur people were attacked on Saturday. Verbally and physically. Children, young people and their families were caught up in a violent and ugly situation that was outrageous and unacceptable.

鈥淎s an organisation, we respect people鈥檚 right to free speech, protest and freedom of expression. Our libraries lead the charge on this. But when it turns violent and aggressive, when shouting drowns out other voices, and when people get hurt (children, for crying out loud!), it has gone too far.鈥

鈥淚n saying he is proud of the actions of his people, Bishop Tamaki is condoning violence and aggression towards our staff and the community and that is deplorable.鈥

Wilson said he was proud of the calm and professional way Saturday鈥檚 attack on a family-friendly event was dealt with by staff at Te Atat奴 Peninsula Library.

鈥淎nd I鈥檓 proud of the decent members of our community who supported them.鈥

Today staff confronted by violent protesters who barged past them to reach the science show were 鈥渉olding up鈥 but remained shaken by the ordeal.

Wait膩kere ward councillor Shane Henderson said an impromptu event at the Te Atat奴 Peninsula Library took place this morning with around 100 people showing up in solidarity with the staff.

He said library staff working on the day were holding up 鈥渁s well as they can be鈥 but were 鈥渧ery upset鈥 by Saturday鈥檚 attack.

鈥淚t was thuggish behaviour and they felt really physically intimidated, but they鈥檙e pulling through.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e doing a fantastic job for our city, and we鈥檙e just so proud of them ... for standing up to what was wrong.鈥

Destiny Church members also held up Auckland's Rainbow Parade as they performed a haka on Saturday.Destiny Church members also held up Auckland's Rainbow Parade as they performed a haka on Saturday.

Henderson described the crowd as a 鈥渄iverse mix of people鈥 that he said represented how the Te Atat奴 community was feeling.

鈥淲e just shared stories and tried to lift the pain that the whole community is feeling.

鈥淧eople shared their stories that we need to respond to [the protest] through showing people love and kindness.鈥

On X, Henderson shared a photo of the crowd and said they 鈥渦plifted the space from the ugly events of the weekend.鈥

During the protest, members of Destiny Church groups were denied entry into the ticketed event at the Te Atat奴 Community Centre and then bowled past council staff and event organisers.

Brian Tamaki says he told a leader of his Destiny Church groups Man Up and Legacy Sisterhood to storm a community centre where the event was happening.

Earlier, Tamaki told the Herald that Man Up was forced to step up and take peaceful action with the Government refusing to 鈥渁ddress the excessive spending on borderline pornography and perversion targeting our innocent Kiwi kids鈥.

The event was a children鈥檚 science show hosted by a popular Auckland drag artist. Auckland Council cancelled a second show slated for later that afternoon due to fears of more protest action.

Hours later, the same groups broke through police barricades at the Auckland Rainbow Parade on Ponsonby Rd, blocking the parade as they performed a haka. As police dispersed them, they danced and swaggered away, smiling and waving to an unimpressed crowd.

Prime Minister  and said diversity made the country a better place, while  Mayor  labelled their behaviour as thuggery.

Acting Waitemat膩 District Commander Inspector Simon Walker said police strongly condemned the actions of the group and said 鈥渢he protest crossed the line鈥.
