Three iwi have applied for temporary听fishing听closures across three areas within the Hauraki Gulf.听

Ng膩ti P膩oa, Ng膩i Tai ki T膩maki and Ng膩ti Tamater膩 are members of the听Pou R膩hui Research Project, an initiative incorporating m膩tauranga M膩ori alongside modern scientific tools to restore identified marine taonga species within r膩hui areas of their rohe.听

The proposed closures cover听Waiheke Island, Umupuia Beach near the Duder Regional Park, and the coastline of Te M膩t膩 and Waipatukahu on the Coromandel Peninsula.听

The application was lodged with the听Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI)听which is now inviting feedback on the proposals.

MPI fisheries management director Emma Taylor said if approved, the closures would prohibit taking some shellfish species from these areas for two years.

鈥淲e support traditional customary fisheries management such as r膩hui and consider a range of views along with the best available science and information.

鈥淭his includes information we receive from tangata whenua and people who have valuable insights about what鈥檚 going on in their fisheries 鈥 it鈥檚 local knowledge from people who know their fishery well,鈥 Taylor said.

The Pou R膩hui Research Project is aimed at developing iwi capability for assessing the need for r膩hui and managing their implementation.

Ng膩ti P膩oa, Ng膩i Tai ki T膩maki and Ng膩ti Tamater膩 have expressed concern for the long-term sustainability of certain taonga species in their rohe moana.

鈥淭he removal of fishing pressure is an immediate way we can help these taonga species recover so they continue to provide for future generations,鈥 said Taylor.

鈥淲e鈥檇 like to hear from anyone with an interest to understand the viewpoints and experiences of the people affected by the proposals. This information is considered alongside science and any other relevant facts to develop advice for the Minister who will make the final decision.鈥

Submissions can be made online until 5pm on June 7.
