Wellington Central MP Tamatha Paul included songs about police brutality in her set at the capital鈥檚 CubaDupa festival
Paul made her comments during a university students鈥 panel discussion on 鈥渞adical alternative to policing鈥. She told the event 鈥 hosted by the University of Canterbury鈥檚 Greens and Peace Action 艑tautahi 鈥 that she has heard 鈥渘othing but complaints鈥 about police beat patrols across the country.
She also said it was 鈥渃ompletely possible鈥 to 鈥渟et up institutions that can overtake lots of functions of the police鈥.
鈥淲ellington people do not want to see police officers everywhere, and, for a lot of people, it makes them feel less safe. It鈥檚 that constant visual presence that tells you that you might not be safe there, if there鈥檚 heaps of cops,鈥 she said.
鈥淎ll they do is walk around all day, waiting for homeless people to leave their spot, packing their stuff up and throwing it in the bin.鈥
Her comments including a potential future coalition partner.
Labour leader Chris Hipkins said the comments were 鈥渋ll-informed, were unwise, and in fact were stupid. I don鈥檛 think responsible Members of Parliament should be undermining the police in that way.鈥
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said it was 鈥渜uite outrageous and insane to be honest鈥. He said police were doing an 鈥渋ncredible job鈥
Act鈥檚 David Seymour and NZ First鈥檚 Winston Peters also spoke out, and National鈥檚 Police Minister Mark Mitchell pointed out Wellington Central had experienced a 5.5% drop in violent crime since the beat teams were deployed.
Tamatha Paul shared clips of her DJ set on Instagram.
After the week of critical coverage Paul took to the stage on Cuba St on Saturday evening. She shared clips of her DJ set on Instagram.
Songs she played included Sound of da Police by rapper KRS-One and Killing in the Name by rock band Rage Against the Machine.
The songs focus on issues of police brutality and corruption in America.
Lyrics include 鈥渢he officer has the right to arrest and if you fight back they put a hole in your chest鈥, with Sound of da Police comparing modern officers to 鈥渙verseers鈥 on a plantation during the time of slavery.
Killing in the Name includes a repeated line 鈥渟ome of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses鈥, linking the police to the Ku Klux Klan. The song ends with the well-known chant: 鈥渇*** you I won鈥檛 do what you tell me鈥.
Paul also called out her love to the crowd, and yelled 鈥淚 will never ever, ever, ever shut the f*** up.鈥
Green Party co-leader Chl枚e Swarbrick dismissed queries about Paul鈥檚 set.
鈥淩ight now, there are New Zealanders living cold, hungry, and homeless,鈥 she said.
鈥淲e have real issues in this country, and I don鈥檛 think policing people鈥檚 music taste should be one of them.鈥
