Police dog handling dream comes true: 'You get to go home at the end of the day with your mate'

Constable Cole Devenport sympathises with the dog owners among us, whose prized family pooches don鈥檛 always do as they鈥檙e told.

鈥淚鈥檓 still learning as much as anyone and I have my bad days too,鈥 Devenport said, with a chuckle.

鈥淲e鈥檙e lucky with our dogs, in that they鈥檙e bred with a purpose and they鈥檝e got an idea of what they鈥檝e got to do.鈥

Devenport and his dog Lacey just graduated from the New Zealand Police Dog Training Centre and are now on the beat in听Hawke鈥檚 Bay.

Eight teams graduated all up, including three from the Eastern District. Constable Mitch Wooding and Boris join Devenport in being deployed in Hawke鈥檚 Bay, while Constable Alan Hogarth and Igar are off to Gisborne.

Devenport has been in frontline policing for 10 years, including a handful of those in the Armed Offenders Squad.

But dog handling 鈥渉as always been my dream and I鈥檓 super stoked鈥 to be doing it with his new best friend.

鈥淚n terms of getting teamed up, it really was just luck of the draw and I鈥檓 super, super grateful to be teamed up with Lacey because she鈥檚 a beautiful dog and a bond, just like in any relationship, is just so important,鈥 Devenport said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really neat that you get to go to work and then go home at the end of the day with your mate.

鈥淪he鈥檚 got a beautiful temperament and, at work, she鈥檚 super-driven and just wants to win.鈥

Lacey鈥檚 also teaching Devenport a thing or two, particularly when it comes to the physical training dogs and their handlers need to do.

The 2-and-a-half-year-old German shepherd is a ball of energy, as Devenport has discovered.

鈥淚 thought I was doing all right, but once I had to start running around after Lacey I soon realised I had a bit of work to do,鈥 he said.

Devenport regards policing as 鈥渁 privilege鈥 and says he and Lacey will 鈥渄o anything we can to keep our community safe鈥.

But it鈥檚 also unpredictable and, sometimes, dangerous work that not everyone鈥檚 cut out for.

鈥淭o be a dog handler, you鈥檝e got to have a really good grounding and foundation as a frontline officer first,鈥 Devenport said.

鈥淎s a dog handler, you鈥檙e on the frontline and there鈥檚 a huge variety in the work that you do.鈥

What makes that work especially rewarding for Devenport, is the knowledge he鈥檚 got Lacey by his side.
