Contractors removed a large melia tree in Palmerston Rd alongside the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) yesterday morning that posed a “safety risk”, but Gisborne District Council has no plans to remove any more.

Liveable spaces manager for the council De-Arne Sutherland said it posed a tripping hazard to pedestrians.

“It was a safety risk and also was causing significant and uncontrollable damage to the footpath.

“To facilitate necessary footpath repairs, the tree had to be removed, she said.

“We were also made aware of several accident reports related to the tree, which were mentioned to us via EIT.

“In collaboration with the council’s journeys team we are addressing the footpath repairs to minimise the impact on the community.”

Other contractors moved onto the site after the tree was removed to carry out footpath repairs.

“We recognise the importance of maintaining a green and healthy streetscape,” Sutherland said.

“Given that there are only a few mature trees remaining along Palmerston Rd, replanting efforts are a priority for us.

“We are planning a tree planting initiative along this road in the near future.”

A council spokeswoman added later they have no plans to remove any more of the melia trees in the street.
