He鈥檚 come from听Auckland听with pockets stuffed full of lollies for family he hasn鈥檛 seen in decades, the sweet treats among a swag of gifts that made his bag 20kg overweight on the first flight he鈥檚 taken as a free man.听
Behind the patched Black Power听gang听member, who has a long history of violent offending and has spent most of the past 40 years behind bars, gold lettering on a wall panel reminds him, 鈥淭oday is a new beginning鈥.听
In front, are family members Kahu knows he鈥檚 probably hurt over his 58 years.听
鈥淚 love my family 鈥 to all the older ones [here], if anything I鈥檝e done over the years - anything bad against any of you - I am so sorry.听
鈥淣ow, I can come here without holding on to this anger 鈥 it鈥檚 time for me to move on. I really wanna get close to my family, I pushed all my family to the side too long 鈥 but, yeah, thank you for being here.鈥听
Kahu, who has been in the听justice system听since he was sent to a boy鈥檚 home aged 9, followed by jail at 15, looks nervous.听
But his family reacts warmly; the sister he hasn鈥檛 seen in decades rising to her feet.听
鈥淕roup hug鈥, she says.听
鈥淐ome on, that鈥檚 what we do.鈥听
It鈥檚 a touching moment, and a sharp contrast to the opening scene in Kahu鈥檚 story - one of three told in the documentary听100 Days Free, which goes live on听nzherald.co.nz听today.听
鈥淭hey shot me in the head and leg鈥, he tells documentary maker Anthony Costello of a previous confrontation with police.听
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 care if I wanted to die or not. I put my finger where they shot me in the leg, and I drawed [sic] this cross on my head. And I told this cop, 鈥榊ou should鈥檝e shot me in the head, you p***k鈥.鈥听
鈥業 learnt how to be a criminal in Australia鈥听
Kahu鈥檚 efforts to rekindle long-neglected relationships with wh膩nau are mirrored by the two other former prisoners featured in the documentary series,听501 deportee听Josh - desperate to remain a part of his kids鈥 lives despite the forced geographical separation - and 22-year-old Ethan, who nervously texts his brother after 10 months clean to find out if he鈥檚 welcome back into the family.听
It was emotional moments like these where he could feel his own hands shaking as he held the camera, says Costello, who was joined by wife Greta Young as producer for the project.听

It quickly became clear the three stories shared the same theme - a desire to reconnect with family, he says.听
鈥淸The men] were all essentially on a healing journey with the end goal being reconnected to their families.听
鈥淒uring the series we had our second child and all the participants were so happy for me. Seeing how important family was to them made me even more grateful. It also made me feel so lucky for the upbringing and family that I have.鈥听
A desire for connection was far from the only experience the men shared.听
WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY ON JOSH鈥橲 FIRST 100 DAYS FREE BELOW听
Like Kahu, Josh - who goes only by his first name in the documentary - is dealing with unresolved childhood trauma.听
鈥淚 had a f***ed up upbringing and I can see my kids going through a little bit of the same now, and I want that to stop.鈥听
Born in Gisborne, Josh moved to Australia in 1994 aged 13 after a close relative was sexually abused by another family member.听
Until his deportation after 18 years - on and off - inside for cooking and dealing meth to fund his own addiction, he鈥檇 never been back.听
鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 a criminal before I left here. I learnt how to be a criminal in Australia.鈥听
Clean three months, he tells those supporting him from Te P膩 - a听kaupapa M膩ori听organisation that helps prisoners reintegrate into the community - that his goal is to get a job and save enough money for his two children to visit during the school holidays.听
A good experience will build the foundation for the future visits Josh so depends on.听
鈥淚f I don鈥檛 get to see my kids, that鈥檒l be the end of me 鈥 I鈥檒l paddle a boat over there, it doesn鈥檛 matter.鈥听
In the final scenes, Josh - who鈥檚 kept out of trouble and now has a job spray painting cars - is reunited with his kids in a touching moment at the airport arrivals hall.听
鈥淚鈥檓 proud that I鈥檝e taken responsibility for the s*** that I鈥檝e done wrong in my life, because that鈥檚 the start of healing.听
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 have kids just to forget about 鈥榚m,鈥 he says as he embraces his son and daughter, stroking the young boy鈥檚 hair.听
鈥淚 want my kids growing up knowing that I love them.鈥听
鈥榃e will rebuild - I will help you鈥听
For Ethan, the journey back to acceptance in his family begins with getting clean.听
He left听prison听- after eight months inside for assault - feeling 鈥渓ike a new baby鈥, he tells Costello.听
鈥淚鈥檝e definitely left everything in the black hole back there.鈥听
WATCH ETHAN鈥橲 100 DAYS FREE DOCUMENTARY BELOW听
He expects the cellphone waiting for him on the outside will go 鈥渂ling, bling, bling鈥 when he turns it on, he says, but the only messages are from friends.听
But Ethan hasn鈥檛 lost hope of repairing relationships with family.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 not that I鈥檝e lost [them] but they just want to hear that I鈥檓 doing well, and if I鈥檓 not doing well they鈥檙e not gonna want anything to do with me 鈥 I鈥檝e just gotta keep myself on a good track, so it鈥檚 really up to me to do it.鈥听
A hundred days after leaving prison he texts his brother, telling him he鈥檚 been drug and alcohol-free for 10 months.听
鈥淸I wrote] 鈥楳iss talking to you and seeing what鈥檚 been going on in your life. Love you lots鈥,鈥 he tells Costello.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 not bad sending a love heart [emoji], eh? To your brother.鈥听
He smiles as he reads the replies - his brother has been thinking about him, too, and wants to meet.听
鈥淸He says] 鈥楯ust remember you鈥檙e young and everything that鈥檚 happened is nothing now. We will rebuild - I will help you with whatever you need鈥.鈥听
Like all the men involved in the year-long project, Ethan has since reconnected with family and is working, Costello says.听
鈥淭hey鈥檙e all incredibly motivated to not go back to prison ever again.鈥听
When inside is easier than outside听
Anthony Costello said he was shocked to find out how many former prisoners commit crimes to go back to jail, because they find life outside so hard. Photo / Jason Oxenham听
Unfortunately, that鈥檚 not always so for newly-freed prisoners, the听documentary听maker says.听
He visited many prisoners while choosing participants for the series, and found abuse, poverty, mental health, head injuries and foetal alcohol syndrome were common among those inside.听
鈥淧rison is just a place where we send a big chunk of our most vulnerable people, the people who need our help the most.鈥听
The 35-year-old went into the project thinking only older prisoners become institutionalised, like the fictional Brooks Hatlen from Stephen King鈥檚 book-turned-film听The Shawshank Redemption, who takes his own life after struggling to adapt to freedom after 50 years inside.听
鈥淚 was shocked at the number of people who鈥檇 committed crimes so they could go back to prison 鈥 people of all ages spoke about how prison was a break from their hectic lives on the outside.听
鈥淎 lot of younger people told me inside was easier, safer and less stressful. To me that鈥檚 just a cry for help, for more support.鈥听
Freed prisoners leave with $350 鈥渁nd then you鈥檙e on your own鈥, with many听becoming homeless听- or going straight back to the same life that put them in prison - because they have nowhere to go, Costello says.听
鈥淭hat鈥檚 why Te P膩 is so amazing - they try to provide accommodation and then wraparound services so when you leave prison you鈥檝e got support.听
鈥淎 lot of prisoners can鈥檛 read or write and they need help doing the basic things we take for granted.鈥听
Some filming took place during last year鈥檚 election, which was hard because 鈥渄espite all the evidence, tough on crime is still a big vote winner鈥, he says.听
He wants 鈥済etting tough on crime鈥 to mean 鈥済etting tough on the causes -听poverty, the housing crisis, inequality听and the lack of mental health support鈥.听
鈥淥therwise getting tough on crime just means creating more lifelong criminals who continually cause harm, and create more victims.鈥听
Ultimately, he hopes viewers will see that with the right help and support, people can change.听
鈥淸I wanted to] humanise some of the people who have been to prison. It鈥檚 hard to effectively cover crime in the news - most information comes from court cases and it鈥檚 hard to provide any context to the offending.鈥听
Prisoners - who we never usually hear from directly - are often dehumanised, and reduced to statistics, Costello says.听
鈥淚 wanted to give the opportunity for prisoners to tell their stories, and provide that missing context.听
鈥淏ecause no offending happens in a vacuum.鈥听
