Iwi leaders have stepped in, to help cool simmering tensions between the Meat Workers Union and the owners of Affco meat plants in the North Island.
Around a thousand Affco workers were due to strike today, but it's been called off after a meeting between company owner Andrew Talley, union officials and iwi leaders.
Tainui's Tuku Morgan says iwi leaders were involved in the collective agreement negotiated between the parties in 2012.
"This is a journey back into the past in an attempt to try and break the deadlock, and the ongoing dysfunctionality between the Meat Workers Union and Affco."
Mr Morgan said progress can only be made if both groups can make a fresh start.
"The way forward will hinge around establishing a fresh relationship so that we can provide long term certainty and confidence, not only for the workers but their families."
The Meat Workers Union said its members will meet in the coming days to consider developments.
