Police were not able to charge a staffer at an Auckland private school who believed he was speaking to minors online because he was actually speaking to adults, the school has revealed.

King鈥檚 College last week confirmed the male worker 鈥 who was boarding at the school and involved in its football programme 鈥 had resigned with immediate effect after the allegations came to light.

The matter was reported to police, who yesterday told the Herald: 鈥淧olice have completed an investigation into this matter and have determined that no criminal offences were committed鈥.

Stuff reported that an email shared with parents and staff yesterday asked anyone with concerns about the former staffer to come forward.

鈥淏ased on what we know at this time, [the former staff member鈥檚] inappropriate online activities are limited to seeking connection with younger people outside the college,鈥 the school鈥檚 board of governors chair Shan Wilson said.

Wilson said she understood that students, parents and staff would feel disappointed and betrayed by the former staff member鈥檚 actions.

The email confirmed that no King鈥檚 College student had been harmed in 鈥渁ny way鈥.

鈥淐urrently the police are not in a position to charge [the former staff member], due to the adult age of those who confronted him.鈥

In a statement last week, Wilson and King鈥檚 College headmaster Simon Lamb said they learnt of the staffer鈥檚 alleged online activity on October 21 and the matter was 鈥渧ery concerning鈥 to the school.

鈥淭he school takes matters such as this extremely seriously ... we have tonight reached out to parents and guardians asking them to talk with their child about any concerns they may have in light of this information.鈥

Lamb and Wilson also told parents last week the male staffer 鈥渁cknowledged being involved in inappropriate online activity, where he was under the impression that he was engaging with a minor鈥.

They wrote that as far as they were aware, this online activity did not involve any King鈥檚 College student and it was the first time they had been made aware of concerns over his behaviour.

The staffer also claimed his online activity had not involved any King鈥檚 College student, Lamb and Wilson said.

King鈥檚 College did not wish to make any further comment yesterday, but reiterated the staff member had resigned.
