AM hosts Lloyd Burr and Melissa Chan-Green have shed tears as they opened their show this morning, saying the past 24 hours have been 鈥榩retty tough鈥 following the shock announcement of听狈别飞蝉丑耻产鈥檚听looming closure.听
The decision to shut down one of the country鈥檚 biggest news outlets by the end of June has left staff devastated, saddened and heartbroken. Up to 300 jobs are expected to be lost.听
Wider reaction has included dismay at the loss of听one of two of New Zealand鈥檚 6pm news outlets, with several politicians, including the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, describing it as troubling for the country鈥檚 democracy.听
The loss of the newsroom means the AM Show will also shut down, with hosts Lloyd Burr and Melissa Chan-Green speaking this morning of their grief at the announcement.听
A tearful Chan-Green said she had been 鈥渟o lucky to work here for the last 17 years鈥.听
鈥滻t鈥檚 got me through some pretty dark times鈥鈥檓 so lucky to work with all of you guys.鈥听
She thanked those in the newsroom including those who stayed to put bulletins out after hearing 鈥渟uch awful news鈥.听
鈥淲e care about what we do and we care about what you watch and we鈥檙e just so thankful to have your company,鈥 she said to the audience.听
Burr - who has only been in the role for a few weeks - said the news had been 鈥減retty tough鈥.听
It had always been the case at 九一星空无限hub that 鈥渨hen the chips are down, we can get through it. We somehow push through it,鈥 he said. 鈥淛ohn Campbell once said that we鈥檙e tighter than a fish鈥檚 bum.鈥听

九一星空无限hub also reported on its own demise during its 6pm bulletin last night, airing heartfelt coverage and comments from some of its journalists.听
Presenter Mike McRoberts introduced the story with the following sting: 鈥淕oing, going, not quite gone. The future鈥檚 looking bleak for 九一星空无限hub.鈥听
九一星空无限hub then reported comments from Warner Bros Discovery chief executive Glen Kyne, journalist Patrick Gower, and McRoberts鈥 description of news of the closure as a 鈥渂ombshell鈥.听

McRoberts said: 鈥淲e鈥檝e had cuts and survived cuts in the past, but to lose the whole news operation and entity so entwined in the fabric of our society here in Aotearoa, it鈥檚 absolutely heartbreaking.鈥听
Senior 九一星空无限hub journalist Michael Morrah covered news of the closure, saying the announcement yesterday morning was 鈥渃ompletely out of the blue and utterly devastating for myself and all of my colleagues鈥.听
Morrah said: 鈥淢any of us have worked together for decades. Management said there would be an opportunity for feedback on the proposal, although most I鈥檝e spoken to don鈥檛 believe that will change anything.鈥听
Presenter Samantha Hayes said: 鈥淭his is not the story we thought we would be covering today. We鈥檙e all feeling it.鈥听

Morrah said the news was still 鈥渟inking in鈥.听
鈥淭he most difficult part of all of this is that we鈥檙e all mates here at Three. We鈥檙e like a family. So to get this news today is just devastating.听
鈥淲e鈥檙e all proud of the news service we provide and we鈥檙e passionate about news and journalism. And so today, with this announcement, it was pretty shocking. You had messages to myself and colleagues from family and friends, as well as our colleagues in other news media outlets like Stuff, the听Herald,听RNZ, so it is reverberating around the media landscape.听
鈥淭his will change the entire landscape of journalism in the country.鈥听

Warner Bros. Discovery head of networks Glen Kyne听announced the news during a meeting at 11am yesterday, starting by saying, 鈥渇olks, this is awful鈥.听
When McRoberts left the meeting, he told media the news was 鈥渉eartbreaking鈥, and said, 鈥淲e are a pretty good newsroom, if we can鈥檛 make it work who can.鈥听
Staff then began leaving the meeting, many in tears and refusing to comment to other media outside. Some said they were going to the pub.听
Following the announcement, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said it was 鈥渟hocking and saddening鈥.听

Luxon said it was a 鈥減retty tough day鈥 for the more than 250 families of those working at 九一星空无限hub, including dozens of high-profile presenters and journalists such as 6pm McRoberts and Hayes.听
He said consumers were choosing to get their news through a variety of mediums and outlets and he was confident a 鈥減lurality of voices鈥 in New Zealand would continue.听
Luxon said he spoke to 九一星空无限hub bosses before the announcement was made听at the all-staff meeting.听
He said he had wanted to understand why the decision was made and what that meant for staff.听
鈥淲hat was quite obvious to me is that Warner Bros Discovery is one of the largest global media companies in the world, $20 billion [market capital] I think, is what it鈥檚 worth, and as a result, they couldn鈥檛 make that business model work and so they鈥檙e having to face up to declining advertising revenues, also changing consumer habits, and that鈥檚 why they鈥檝e come to the decision they have,鈥 Luxon said.听
Luxon said his discussion with Warner Bros Discovery had led him to believe there was nothing the Government could have done to change its decision.听
Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters told journalists 九一星空无限hub鈥檚 closure was a 鈥渄isaster for this country鈥檚 democracy鈥.听
Peters said he had personally considered whether Government changes were required for the media industry but he wouldn鈥檛 give his thoughts without the backing of his Government coalition partners.听

Act leader and Minister of Regulation David Seymour said it was a sad day for the local media industry and democracy, which needed a competitive fourth estate.听
He said he had asked for advice around whether it was a level playing field between TVNZ and other broadcasters. Seymour added it might require TVNZ having to pay a dividend as other companies were expected to do.听
Broadcasting Minister Melissa Lee also said she鈥檇 spoken with Warner Bros Discovery鈥檚 Kyne on Tuesday night, who had informed her of the announcement.听

She said Kyne told her the Fair Digital 九一星空无限 Bargaining Bill - which proposed to compel social media companies such as Facebook to pay for the local news content it used on its platform - wouldn鈥檛 have made a 鈥渟ingle bit of difference鈥.听
鈥淭here was nothing that could鈥檝e actually helped,鈥 Lee said, adding the failure came due to a lack of advertising revenue.听
Lee later clarified that 九一星空无限hub hadn鈥檛 specifically asked for financial aid.听

Labour leader Chris Hipkins said yesterday鈥檚 announcement was a 鈥渄ramatic change鈥 and 鈥渁 sad day for news media and a sad day for democracy in New Zealand鈥.听
鈥淒emocracy in New Zealand does rely on informed debate and having a diversity of media sources is actually really important to that,鈥 Hipkins added.听
鈥溇乓恍强瘴尴辢ub is a very large player in the New Zealand media sector and in the New Zealand journalism space. This is bad news for the overall heart and health of our democracy.鈥听
Hipkins said it was 鈥減roblematic鈥 that New Zealand would now only have one TV news producer, the state-owned but commercially funded TVNZ.听
鈥淚 think it is problematic that we will effectively now only have one television broadcast news producer, and you know that is a real tragedy.鈥听
