Northland听gyms and fitness centres are gearing up for an onslaught of new members who made New Year鈥檚 resolutions to better themselves by getting stronger, fitter and healthier.听听
While in early January many people are still in holiday mode, by the end of the month听gyms usually experience an influx of new members听which peaks in February when the kids have gone back to school and people are back in their routines.听
But research shows many people who join a gym will drop out, and gyms will see a decrease in traffic after the first few months of the year.听
The听Northern Advocate听spoke to several gym owners, fitness centre managers and a health coach to find out how to stick with it.听
Whang膩rei Aquatic Centre assistant manager and gym co-ordinator Mo Taylor said while the pool was at 鈥渇ull capacity鈥 from December through January, gym memberships were a different ball game.听
Taylor, who has worked at the centre for 23 years, said gym membership sales usually 鈥渢ake a dive鈥 in December, but January鈥檚 New Year鈥檚 resolutions 鈥渟ee them start ticking over again鈥.听
鈥淵ou get a few new faces in,鈥 he said.听

Of the newbies, about 50 per cent will continue to use the gym, while the other half drop off, Taylor said.听
Taylor鈥檚 advice for sticking with a new fitness regime is 鈥渃onsistency鈥.听
鈥淪tay consistent, get a year-long programme written up and have regular programme changes to keep you motivated.听
鈥淢ake sure you鈥檙e doing the right things to stay motivated. Ask yourself 鈥榳hat was your original goal to get started鈥?.听
鈥淲hat was the reason that made you join up in the first place? Stay true to that.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 not a short-term fix it鈥檚 a lifetime fix.鈥听
Gary-John Hill, from The Fitness Lab in Kerikeri, said new members should get advice from a trainer and not be afraid to ask questions.听
Gary-John Hill, from The Fitness Lab in Kerikeri, said there is 鈥渄efinitely鈥 an influx of people joining the gym at this time of year.听
There are also older members who haven鈥檛 been for a while, who are suddenly more consistent.听
The best thing new members can do is 鈥渟et achievable goals鈥, Hill said.听
鈥淎 lot of people say they want to turn up five or six times a week. That鈥檚 hard to maintain.听
鈥淎im for something smaller, like two to three days a week and you鈥檒l feel better.听
鈥淭hey鈥檙e small wins. Even just turn up and do something you want to do, even if it鈥檚 20 minutes, you build from there.鈥听
Hill said it鈥檚 important to set time aside for gym workouts and make it a priority.听
Even if you don鈥檛 feel like it, encourage yourself to go, he said.听
鈥淵ou鈥檒l never have a crap gym session; you always walk away feeling good about yourself.鈥听
New members should get advice from a trainer and not be afraid to ask questions, Hill said.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 like being in school. Don鈥檛 be afraid to be a beginner. It鈥檚 ok not to know things.听
鈥淵ou don鈥檛 need to go hard out straight away.听
鈥淏y building slowly in intensity and weights you learn more about yourself along the way.鈥听
Whang膩rei health and wellbeing coach Sarah Trass said for any resolutions, knowing why you鈥檙e doing them is key.听
Whang膩rei health and wellbeing coach Sarah Trass said knowing why you鈥檙e making any resolutions is key to sticking at them.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 easy for people to pick things they think they should be doing.听
鈥淭hings like they need to work on their health or go to the gym are common ones.听
鈥淏ut taking a little bit of time and going deeper about why you want to focus on that, and what will it enable you to do?听
鈥淢aybe it鈥檚 because you鈥檒l feel stronger, or you can do those walks you always wanted to do.听
鈥淎sk 鈥榳hat does that look like?鈥 There might be other things you can do to help you feel stronger or walk for longer.鈥听
Another way to keep resolutions is reflecting on your values, Trass said.听
鈥淚 always get clients to assess what in life they really value, and what would help them align with that.听
鈥淚 find those goals are fun because you鈥檙e moving toward things you want.鈥听
Trass agrees breaking goals into bite-sized pieces is a good idea.听
鈥淭hat鈥檚 why some people stop, they go full bore right away with a goal.听
鈥淪top and think what are smaller steps ... instead of going hard out straight away. That makes the goal more achievable across the year and it鈥檚 more sustainable.鈥听
