Students at Northland鈥檚 Kaitaia College received a nasty shock on Wednesday after being provided with raw chicken tenders for their school lunch.

One mother told the听础诲惫辞肠补迟别听she had to take her son home after eating some of the chicken tenders and experiencing symptoms of salmonella poisoning. Maria Parsons, mother of student Ben Parsons, 14 said he vomited three times at school before she picked him up.

Parsons said she is 鈥渄isappointed鈥 in the school lunch provider, Bells Produce.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 basic health and safety guidelines,鈥 she said, 鈥渁nd I know they鈥檝e got a certified chef.鈥

听鈥淭he Ministry of Health really needs to go in and audit and investigate what鈥檚 really going on with the team,鈥 she added.

Kaitaia College Principal Louise Anaru put up an urgent communication on the school鈥檚 Facebook page, stating she had contacted the relevant authorities.

鈥淚 am sorry to report some students may have eaten raw chicken in their lunches today,鈥 she said, 鈥淚 immediately contacted the health authorities.鈥

Advice from the Health Protection Officer stated 鈥淚f your child experiences symptoms after consuming raw chicken in today鈥檚 school lunches- please contact your health provider immediately for health advice.鈥

Anaru said she will update parents and caregivers as more information comes available, and extended her apologies.

鈥淲e are very sorry this has happened and have reported this immediately to the lunch provider, Health Agencies and MPI Food Safety Authority Ministry.鈥

Bells Produce has since provided a statement, apologising for the mistake.

鈥淔irstly we would like to apologise to the school and children who this may have affected. All of the lunches were recalled as a safety measure once we were notified,鈥 they said.

鈥淲e understand this is a concerning issue and we will be investigating what may have caused this issue as well as working with the school and everyone required in this matter to work through it.鈥

鈥淥nce again we are deeply sorry to everybody involved and that those affected lunches were not to a safe and acceptable standard that should be expected.鈥

A social media post on the Kaitaia Community Page of the raw chicken quickly gained traction as concerned parents and students commented.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 really poor from the provider. Inexcusable,鈥 one commentator said.

It鈥檚 currently unknown how many students are experiencing symptoms of salmonella.
