Police recovered the body of Tran Duy Quyen on last Tuesday after he fell into the water while fishing on January 9.
The tragic incident happened at an area known as The Gap 鈥 a spot between Flat Rock and Taitomo Island at the beach鈥檚 southern end.
Jenny Pham told the Herald Quyen and his wife, Nguyen Thi Nhung, came to New Zealand in June 2023 on an .
鈥淚t was a very hard and tough situation because they sold all of their property and spent a lot of money to come here,鈥 she said.
The couple鈥檚 children, aged 3 and 5, were in Vietnam with their grandparents.
鈥淗is family faced great financial hardship, and he was the main worker for the family,鈥 Pham said.
鈥淲ith [Nguyen鈥檚] visa tied to her husband鈥檚, she now faces an uncertain future with just over a year remaining, not knowing where to go.鈥
Pham put a call out to members of New Zealand鈥檚 11,000-strong Vietnamese community to raise money for Nhung and her two children.

鈥淚 shared my account and people deposited into it. Community members also gave Nhung cash,鈥 she said.
Within two days, $47,389 was raised by more than 500 donations.
Quyen鈥檚 wife returned to Vietnam with her husband鈥檚 ashes following a ceremony at the Ch霉a Gi谩c Nhi锚n temple in 艑t膩huhu.
鈥淪he doesn鈥檛 know what to do or whether to come back to New Zealand. It鈥檚 uncertain at this stage,鈥 Pham said.
She said it was heartening to see Vietnamese Kiwis raising tens of thousands of dollars off the back of tragedy.
Piha is regarded as notoriously dangerous with a number of drownings, rescue incidents and near-misses reported over the years.
