'My heart just broke': Witness' grief comes 'flooding back' after swimming hole tragedy

'My heart just broke': Witness' grief comes 'flooding back' after swimming hole tragedy

A witness has described the 鈥渉eart-breaking鈥 scene after a person died at a popular Western Bay of Plenty swimming hole on Wednesday. 

Te Puna woman Jody Stevens told the Bay of Plenty Times she understood a man in his 20s jumped off a rock at the Pori Pori swimming hole and hit his head. 

She said the man was with his partner at the near Poripori Rd,Wairoa River in Lower Kaimai. 

鈥淪he didn鈥檛 want to leave the spot without him. She broke down in front of me 鈥 my heart just broke for her.鈥 

She said people came to the site to support the man鈥檚 whanau in their grief. 

Stevens said she had faced multiple water tragedies in her life and was speaking out to emphasise the importance of water safety, particularly as summer begins. 

鈥楳ay have hit his head鈥 

Stevens said she arrived at the swimming hole just after the incident happened at about 6pm with her two daughters, son, her nephew, and her daughter鈥檚 boyfriend. 

She had been to the swimming hole before and knew there were big rocks people jumped off. 

Stevens described the area as 鈥渂eautiful鈥 and said the water was 鈥渘ice and cold and deep where they were jumping鈥. 

鈥淚 think he may have hit his head on the way down or in the water. 

She understood he 鈥渃ame up not alive鈥. 

She understood members of the public had started giving him CPR on the rocks before emergency services arrived. 

Stevens said emergency services were 鈥渟o onto it鈥. 

鈥淭hey had to take all their gears across all this terrain to get to this boy. They were marvellous.鈥 

She said her nephew and daughter鈥檚 boyfriend helped emergency services get their equipment across the river.

Stevens said the incident was 鈥渉eartbreaking鈥. 

She said she saw the helicopter pull the man鈥檚 body out via a winch. 

鈥楽o much water tragedy鈥 

Stevens said she had 鈥渟o much water tragedy in my life鈥. 

Her 2-year-old sister drowned in a swimming pool at home in 1991 when Stevens was 14. 

Stevens also grew up with Tauranga father Reon Wikeepa who drowned trying to save his daughter swimming in Mount Maunganui in November 2022. 

Wednesday鈥檚 tragedy meant her grief from her personal experiences came 鈥渇looding back鈥. 

鈥淵ou just feel so wholeheartedly for these people that are going through this tragedy that鈥檚 unfolding in front of your eyes. 

鈥淭here was a lot of feelings that I had and emotions that I had towards these people.鈥 

She wanted to spread awareness about the importance of water safety at the start of summer. 

鈥淐heck the water before you jump. It鈥檚 one of the most important things when you鈥檙e at a watering hole and you want to jump off a rock. 

鈥淭he weather that we鈥檙e having 鈥 it鈥檚 bringing everybody to the water holes.鈥 

Emergency services responded to a 鈥渨ater-related incident鈥 in the Wairoa River near Poripori Rd, Lower Kaimai, about 6.15pm on Wednesday. 

Police this morning said a person had been pulled unresponsive from the water. First aid was started but the person died at the scene. 

The death will be referred to the coroner. 

A Ng膩ti Hangarau spokesperson said a r膩hui had been put in place by their kaumatua for two weeks effective from Thursday. 

A karakia had been done at the site.
