The remains of a Waikato man who was murdered in 1933 have been buried beside his wife in Huntly.

Samuel and Christobel Lakey were murdered at their farm near the town 82 years ago.

She said today, 82 years later, the couple have finally been reunited and their remains will lie peacefully beside each other on the banks of the Waikato river.

Nelson said a haunting rendition of Amazing Grace filled the cemetery as local police officers, the Police Museum director a man who wrote a book about the murders and an elderly woman who's grandfather discovered Christobel's body paid their final respects.

A small number of Mr Lakey's remains had been part of a backroom Police Museum collection placed in storage following their use for investigative training last century.

Western Waikato Area Commander, Inspector Naila Hassan,said the Lakeys’ murders sparked an intensive homicide investigation that was ground breaking in terms of forensic science of the time.

She said the Crown was able to prove that the couple’s neighbour, William BAYLEY, murdered the couple and tried to stage things to appear that the deaths were a murder-suicide.

The ceremony today brings to a close a dark chapter in the district and the country’s past
