The chair of the Whanau Ora Commissioning Agency says Oranga Tamariki is not up to the job and fears more children under 3 will keep dying if issues are not addressed.听
This comes after the uncle of听slain toddler Ruthless-Empire听revealed he had contacted Oranga Tamariki in December, asking for the child to be uplifted over significant concerns he had about the way he was treated, believing he was in 鈥渄anger鈥 as well as the 鈥渄isgusting鈥 conditions he was living in.听
鈥淗ere we go again,鈥 Whanau Ora Commissioning Agency chair Merepeka Raukawa-Tait told 九一星空无限talk ZB鈥檚 Mike Hosking.听
Ruthless-Empire died in hospital.听
Asked if she thought Oranga Tamariki was up to it as an agency, Raukawa-Tait said 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think so.鈥听
鈥淚 have no doubt they鈥檙e trying to do their best, but these things happen so often.鈥听
Raukawa-Tait says she receives calls each week from concerned parents or grandparents, fearing something will happen to their children.听
Too often she hears that Oranga Tamariki cannot intervene until an incident actually happens, she said.听

鈥淲ell, hell no, that鈥檚 quite wrong.听
- New details in Ruthless-Empire case reflect need for Oranga Tamariki shake up
- Families need to "take greater responsibility" to end child abuse
鈥淭o be honest, I鈥檓, I鈥檓 at a loss these days.听
鈥淚 look at it and I think, you know, we鈥檙e going to have children that will live and die before they are 3 years of age because no one actually is prepared to either confront and have those hard conversations or actually say we need to monitor these children.听
鈥淚f it can鈥檛 be done by a government agency, then it has to be done by somebody else.鈥听
Raukawa-Tait said responsibility also falls on families.听
鈥淚 don鈥檛 think it is going to end unless people actually take seriously what happens in their home.听
鈥淲e know that for every child that is killed in New Zealand that six adults know that something is happening to that child.鈥听
Child Matters CEO Jane Searle.听
Child Matters chief executive Jane Searle says it is concerning how many complaints to Oranga Tamariki slip through the cracks.听
She told 九一星空无限talk ZB鈥檚 Kate Hawkesby that out of 70,000 complaints a year, just 38,000 concerning 51,000 children were assessed or investigated.听
Searle added that it was incredible to also know that the agency did not hold data on the number of children who died as a result of abuse or neglect.听
She agreed that the case of Ruthless-Empire was another example of the dire need for reform.听
鈥淲e need to remember that each one of these deaths is completely preventable,鈥 said Searle.听
鈥淲e have known for a long time that Oranga Tamariki is not fit for purpose.鈥听
