Act leader David Seymour is likely to be in Speaker of the House Gerry Brownlee鈥檚 bad books after he drove up Parliament鈥檚 steps in a historic Land Rover before being ordered to stop by security.

Seymour, also the Regulations Minister, was on Parliament鈥檚 forecourt this afternoon admiring New Zealand鈥檚 first-ever Land Rover, built 77 years ago, that was being driven up the country by members of Drive 4 Heart, who were raising funding for new heart valve devices for children which don鈥檛 need replacing with further surgery.

The same vehicle was brought to Parliament in 1948 and driven up the steps to showcase its off-road capabilities.

Seymour today sought to replicate that moment and drove the Land Rover up a couple of Parliament鈥檚 steps before security quickly intervened.

鈥淒on鈥檛! Get off! Off,鈥 one security staffer said to Seymour.

鈥淲hat鈥檚 the problem,鈥 Seymour asked from the front seat.

鈥淭he Speaker has said no,鈥 the staffer replied bluntly.

鈥淥h I didn鈥檛 know that,鈥 Seymour admitted.

鈥淩everse please,鈥 the staffer said.

鈥淭urns out the Speaker said we couldn鈥檛 do it, oh well,鈥 Seymour explained to waiting reporters.

After exiting the vehicle, Seymour said he was under the impression Brownlee had given permission.

鈥淭here鈥檚 always a bit of red tape trying to stop you doing something for a good cause in this country, isn鈥檛 there.鈥

Seymour said he had been keen to see how many steps the old Land Rover could climb.

鈥淭hey told us the Speaker had explicitly said no, no one else told me that, they should have said earlier.

鈥淵ou shouldn鈥檛 need to get permission to do every sort of thing in New Zealand.鈥

Seymour then said MPs shouldn鈥檛 need permission to drive a vehicle up the steps of Parliament because it was their workplace, particularly if it was for a good cause.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e a Member of Parliament, yeah, I think people can use their judgment.鈥

The same privilege didn鈥檛 extend to Parliament staff in Seymour鈥檚 view, who said they worked for MPs.
