One teenager has pulled out of the Coalition Government鈥檚 boot camp pilot after just two weeks.

The group of 10 young people started the 12-month programme 鈥 the first three months of which are at a military-style academy in Palmerston North 鈥 at the end of last month.

Children鈥檚 Minister Karen Chhour says one person has already opted out of the pilot for personal reasons and will complete their sentence at another Youth Justice Facility instead.

Currently the teenagers can choose to leave because the boot camps have not been legislated for, but once it passes into law next year that will not be an option.

鈥淥ranga Tamariki had prepared for such an occurrence, and it was decided that exiting the programme was in the best interest of the youth, his wh膩nau and the other participants,鈥 Chhour said.

The boot camps include military-style drills and physical exercise.

鈥淭he physical activities have been very popular with the young people, and more may be included in the programme,鈥 Chhour said.

鈥淭hose taking part in the pilot have a set routine, starting with breakfast, shower, and military-style drills and daily hygiene routines, such as ensuring their rooms are clean, clothes are ironed, and they are taking pride in their presentation.鈥

In addition, the young people have been introduced to 鈥渢herapeutic and criminogenic approaches through clinical sessions鈥.

鈥淎cademy staff onsite are monitoring and seeking daily feedback on the activities, structure and their individual settling into the programme.

The academy delivery team that is supporting the young people consists of 17 men and nine women who have been selected for their experience and unique skill sets.

Over 70% of the staff whakapapa M膩ori and/or Pasifika and 30% have an ex-military or police career background.

As of the two-week point, there had been no safety or wellbeing concerns raised about the operation of the programme, Chhour said.

鈥淎s I have said before, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to combating youth crime.

鈥淚 believe that this pilot will help both address the offending behaviour of the young people and ensure they are held accountable, and face up to, their actions.鈥
