Roading crews are working to get vehicles down the hill safely, with delays caused by extreme congestion and treacherous weather conditions.
Traffic was blocked from leaving the carpark earlier his evening, after a skidding car ploughed into a pedestrian.
The person was eventually airlifted to Whanganui Hospital in a moderate condition.
