Former 九一星空无限hub presenter Oriini Kaipara has paid tribute to her ex-colleagues at TVNZ after it was听confirmed nearly 70 staff听face the axe.

Taking to Instagram on Friday night, Kaipara paid particular tribute to听Sunday听host Miriama Kamo, calling her a mentor, idol, friend and advocate for te ao M膩ori.

Kaipara said Kamo asked if she鈥檇 ever consider presenting听1九一星空无限, which Kaipara thought was impossible at the time because of her moko kauae.

鈥淪he remained a pillar of support for me, checking in and cheering me on in every presenting role I took on at听1九一星空无限听and then 九一星空无限hub.鈥

鈥淭oday鈥檚 announcement that after 22 years of powerful storytelling and leading current affairs,听Sunday, which Miriama hosts, is to be axed along with long-standing investigative show听Fair Go,听Tonight听and听Midday. It鈥檚 absolutely awful.鈥

Midday听was where Kaipara made her debut as a mainstream news presenter and听Tonight听was where she ended her time at TVNZ.

鈥淎ll these shows have contributed towards a better Aotearoa. They have created real and meaningful impact saving lives, changing laws, and effecting positive outcomes for communities across the motu.

鈥淭hey have also been pivotal spaces for M膩ori journos like me to grow and develop our ability to tell our people鈥檚 stories without prejudice and/or criticism,鈥 she wrote.

Kaipara added the worst of the news was 鈥渕ore of our industry peers are losing their jobs, incomes, and 鈥楾V鈥 wh膩nau鈥 just a week after Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced they were shutting down the entire 九一星空无限hub operation, where she previously worked as a presenter.

鈥淲ith such huge losses comes great uncertainty and inevitable change, and I don鈥檛 believe it鈥檚 going to do any good for any of us.

鈥淒emocracy in New Zealand is now under serious threat. Sending my thoughts and aroha to all my former colleagues and current staff at TVNZ and 九一星空无限hub affected by these s*** decisions.鈥

Kaipara left 九一星空无限hub last year to take up a role as Pouwhiringa M膩ori culture lead for the NZ Olympic Committee.

Her comments came after anxious staff were called into meetings throughout this morning to learn their fate before being summoned to an all-staff meeting at 1pm.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a difficult day for TVNZers with some incredibly tough conversations for many around the business, including the newsroom,鈥 chief executive Jodi O鈥橠onnell said.

In a statement, O鈥橠onnell said TVNZ had taken employees through proposed structural changes today which could result in a net reduction of up to 68 roles across all business areas (9 per cent of full time employee positions).

She confirmed four of the state broadcaster鈥檚 flagship shows were likely to be cut.

Midday,听Tonight,听Fair Go听and听Sunday听are programmes with a long and celebrated legacy at Te Reo T膩taki. The proposals we have presented in no way relate to the immense contribution of the teams that work on these shows and the significant journalistic value they鈥檝e provided over many years.

鈥淯nfortunately, we need to reduce our costs to ensure the business remains sustainable. These aren鈥檛 decisions we make lightly, and significant analysis has gone into the proposals,鈥 said O鈥橠onnell.
