- Jared Sione-Lauaki denies involvement in the death of wife Jo Sione-Lauaki, found on Omamari Beach.
- Police believe Jo Sione-Lauaki was a victim of foul play and are seeking a man known to them.
- Over 200 people attended Jo Sione-Lauaki鈥檚 farewell in Auckland, including family and gang members.
The husband of a mum of eight found dead in 鈥渦nexplained鈥 circumstances on a Northland beach says he is not responsible for her death.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 hurt my wife,鈥 Jared Sione-Lauaki told the Herald after hundreds gathered in Auckland today to farewell Jo Sione-Lauaki five days after her body was found on remote Omamari Beach north of Dargaville.
鈥淚 was at home asleep with my babies 鈥 the police have ruled me out as a suspect, 100% from the start,鈥 the Dargaville dairy farm worker said.
Police have described the 38-year-old mother and wife鈥檚 death as 鈥渦nexplained鈥, and her family said police have told them they believe she was the victim of foul play.
Police are also understood to be looking for a man 鈥 known to them 鈥 who was seen with Sione-Lauaki before she died, 1九一星空无限 reported yesterday.
They weren鈥檛 able to comment further on the investigation 鈥渁t this time鈥, a police spokesman said this afternoon.
鈥淲e are still awaiting the findings of a post-mortem from the pathologist,鈥 Detective Senior Sergeant John Clayton said in his most recent statement.
鈥淧olice are in the process of collecting evidence, and a scene examination has been completed. We continue to encourage the public to contact us if you have information which might be relevant to our investigation.鈥
Jared Sione-Lauaki hoped people would continue to do this and 鈥渏ust cut the rumours out鈥, he said of speculation on and offline about what happened when Sione-Lauaki disappeared after telling her husband she was going to the beach late on Thursday.

鈥淛ust let the truth come out when it needs to come out and let it be at that 鈥 it annoys me that people think 鈥 because I鈥檓 a Black Power member 鈥 they instantly think, 鈥極h, he鈥檚 done that鈥.
鈥淭he other rumours are that she was with someone, or there was someone involved that had facial tattoos. I鈥檝e got a couple of facial tattoos but that doesn鈥檛 mean I done it.
鈥淵eah, it hurts when I hear that. How about taking my feelings into consideration? It just upsets me, you know, regardless of who I am, I have a big heart and like I said [we were together] 21 years, no one can ever replace that 鈥 [and] some selfish person went and stole that from us, from me.鈥
He realised she hadn鈥檛 come home after waking at 5.15am last Friday to go to work, taking his phone off flight mode to discover she鈥檇 sent him a one-word text message 鈥 鈥淗elp鈥, Jared Sione-Lauaki told the Herald on Saturday.
鈥淚 text, I rang, I text, I rang, I text, I rang.鈥
But there was no response.
Jared Sione-Lauaki went to work but about 9.20am told his boss he needed to leave, and he and his daughter unsuccessfully searched north of Baylys Beach, the family鈥檚 usual beach destination.
He wasn鈥檛 concerned before he went to bed at 8.30pm or 9pm the night before because his wife鈥檚 decision to go to the beach wasn鈥檛 unusual.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 normal for her to do that sort of thing.鈥
The father and daughter reported Sione-Lauaki missing to police late on Friday morning, and her body was found by a member of the public between Omamari and Aranga beaches about 2pm that day.
They didn鈥檛 have any enemies, Jared Sione-Lauaki said, noting he gave those from other gangs 鈥渢he same love and respect鈥 he gave his own family or 鈥渂rothers鈥.
鈥淣ot everyone鈥檚 bad 鈥 we鈥檙e all family men 鈥 when you鈥檝e worked as hard as I have for my family, then [these rumours] are last thing I need to be hearing.
鈥淚 just need to focus on my kids and that鈥檚 all I wanna focus on at the moment.鈥
His six surviving kids 鈥 the couple鈥檚 daughter Jacinda Sione-Lauaki died aged 19 in a Christmas Eve 2022 car crash and Jodicye Alliyah Panapa Sione-Lauaki died aged 3 weeks in 2007 鈥 are 鈥渟urprisingly doing probably better than me鈥, Jared Sione-Lauaki said.
鈥淚t should be the other way around. But I鈥檒l be all right ... my heart, it鈥檚 just sore.鈥

Despite his grief, he鈥檇 have to 鈥減ut my gumboots on and go back to work鈥, probably in the next few days, he said.
鈥淵our home and your security comes with the job 鈥 and [my employer鈥檚] gonna need me back.鈥
This morning鈥檚 service was the farewell his wife deserved.
鈥淭hat was one of the best send-offs I鈥檝e seen for a while. Yeah, it was pretty moving.鈥
More than 200 people gathered at Schnapper Rock Crematorium Chapel in Auckland to share memories, offer prayer and sing waiata in Sione-Lauaki鈥檚 memory.
Later mourners performed a powerful haka outside, among those at a service that included a large number of people from the Black Power, Mongrel Mob and Head Hunters gangs.
鈥淲e love you Mum,鈥 Josharney Panapa said, speaking for herself and her siblings after the cloak-covered coffin was carried inside and placed at the centre of the chapel, at least one member of the wh膩nau never leaving its side.
Matilda Kahotea Panapa said her future sister-in-law had given her a testing start when they met after she began dating Sione-Lauaki鈥檚 brother while the younger sister was still in intermediate school.
鈥淪he asked me, 鈥榃ho are you?鈥 I said, 鈥業鈥檓 your brother鈥檚 girlfriend鈥. She said, 鈥榃e鈥檒l see鈥,鈥 Kahotea Panapa said to laughter from those gathered.
鈥淪he tested me 鈥 and then she stole my heart.鈥

Sione-Lauaki was a 鈥淩ed Band gumboots and Swanndri woman, but when you saw her going out, man she was beautiful - she looked like a queen鈥.
鈥淭o my brother Jared, nobody really knows the pain of losing two children, and not long after losing half your soul 鈥 I still don鈥檛 know what to say to you 鈥 [but] I鈥檓 there for you.鈥
She also praised the couple鈥檚 children, the youngest 12 and the eldest 22.
鈥淭hese kids are strong, and it鈥檚 testament to their mother and the values she instilled in them.鈥
Even in their grief, family were taking comfort in their memories, Sione-Lauaki鈥檚 Scotland-based niece wrote in a tribute read out to mourners.
鈥淭he laughter, the tears, the adventures and also the quiet moments of introspection. You had a heart that was full of empathy 鈥 and a gift for helping everyone feel safe, feel heard and feel valued.鈥
