Greenpeace protestors scaled Fonterra鈥檚 Te Rapa dairy factory this morning to protest the company鈥檚 methane emissions.
The protesters unfurled a banner before they abseiled down the blue glass windows of the Hamilton building.
鈥淔onterra鈥檚 methane cooks the climate鈥, the banner read.
In a Greenpeace press release, spokeswoman Sin茅ad Deighton-O鈥橣lynn said the activists were in Hamilton to call on Fonterra to 鈥渆nd their climate destruction鈥.
鈥淲e have the chance to pull the climate emergency brake by cutting methane emissions now. If the world reduces cow numbers, we can slow down climate change and prevent the worst climate catastrophes.
鈥淎s the world鈥檚 biggest exporter of dairy products, New Zealand has a huge role to play in this story. That requires us to demand better from our biggest dairy company, Fonterra.鈥
Deighton-O鈥橣lynne said New Zealand鈥檚 dairy herds were sustained through excessive use of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser and palm kernel.
鈥淔onterra could cut methane emissions by ending its reliance on palm kernel, phasing out synthetic nitrogen fertiliser, and reducing herd sizes.
鈥淪upporting farmers to shift to more plant-based and ecological farming practices is entirely within Fonterra鈥檚 control.鈥
In a statement, a police spokesperson said the protest was reported at about 7am.
The spokesperson said officers were with protesters on the ground and there were 鈥渘o issues鈥.
鈥淧olice recognises the right to peaceful protest,鈥 the statement said.
The police statement said unlawful behaviour would result in enforcement action, either at the time or following the event if safety issues prevent immediate action.
鈥淭here have been no arrests so far and there are no delays for traffic.鈥
Police have since removed the banner from the building.
Fonterra has been contacted for comment.
