A young Kiwi has died while working in Canada after a sudden medical event.
Matthew (Mattie) Mitchell, 22, had left his hometown of Christchurch to work in Canada.
He died on January 23 after going into 鈥渟erious medical distress鈥 at his restaurant job in Whistler.
The Herald understands Mitchell had been working at Whistler鈥檚 local fine dining restaurant Wild Blue and the Whistler Creekside Market.
Both restaurants shared their 鈥渄eep鈥 sadness over Mitchell鈥檚 death.
鈥淒espite the best efforts of Whistler first responders, we are heartbroken to share that they did not survive,鈥 Wild Blue said on Facebook.
鈥淭his loss has deeply impacted our team.鈥

A had been started to bring Mitchell鈥檚 body home and has raised more than $15,000.
Lisa Brignull, who worked alongside Mitchell at F45 in Christchurch and created the page, said his mother, father and brother had flown to Canada.
鈥淭he process of bringing [Mitchell] home is deeply complex and comes with significant expenses.
鈥淎 full autopsy will be conducted in Vancouver to determine the cause of his passing, and there are numerous logistical, legal, and financial challenges involved in returning him to New Zealand.鈥
The page described Mitchell as a 鈥渞emarkable F45 coach and a talented gymnast鈥.
鈥淗e inspired and encouraged everyone around him. His infectious laugh, kind heart, and ability to uplift others made him truly one of a kind.
鈥淗e even ran a marathon without training for it, demonstrating his incredible determination, resilience, and adventurous spirit.
鈥淗e believed in pushing boundaries and living life to the fullest.鈥
It said Mitchell adored his family and said he spoke highly of his parents and younger brother.
鈥淗e leaves behind unforgettable memories and a legacy of love, laughter, and positivity.鈥
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been approached for comment.
