Prime Minister听Christopher Luxon听has dismissed previous听National Party听criticisms of听Police听Commissioner Andrew Coster 鈥撎including that he鈥檚 a 鈥渨okester鈥听鈥 while commenting on Coster鈥檚听appointment to head the Social Investment Agency.听
During a media appearance on Tuesday morning, which began prior to a public statement about Coster鈥檚 appointment, the Prime Minister initially tried to fend off questions about Coster鈥檚 future.听
鈥淲e will have some announcements about that very shortly,鈥 Luxon repeated, before explaining why he thought Coster had been an 鈥渙utstanding鈥澨Police Commissioner.听
But after he was asked by the听Herald听how Coster鈥檚 achievements with the police may translate to being the head of the Social Investment Agency, Luxon gave the game away.听
鈥淚 think he comes to the job uniquely qualified,鈥 Luxon said.听
When journalists put to him that he had just made the announcement, Luxon went red.听
鈥淵ou obviously want to talk about it... so that鈥檚 fine, let鈥檚 talk about it,鈥 he said, laughing.听
鈥淗e will be an outstanding head of the Social Investment Agency. He鈥檚 worked in justice. He鈥檚 worked in police. He understands the root causes of some of the problems that we鈥檝e got. We are determined to make sure that social investment moves from theory into actual action. It鈥檚 really important that that happens.鈥听
Luxon listed some of Coster鈥檚 achievements at police, including 鈥taking out the Comancheros鈥, putting听more beat police on the street听and going after boy racers.听

But Coster鈥檚 approach to policing has previously been criticised by the now governing National Party. Most notably, in 2021, National鈥檚 then-justice spokesman (and former leader) Simon Bridges called Coster a 鈥渨okester commissioner鈥.听
Bridges said Coster appeared to believe that 鈥渂eing nice to everyone鈥 was 鈥渏ust as or more important to him鈥 as cracking down on crime. Coster didn鈥檛 respond to the 鈥渨okester鈥 comment, but said he was committed to actions that made communities safe.听
Asked about National鈥檚 previous criticisms, including the 鈥渨okester鈥 comment, Luxon on Tuesday responded: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 care. I am leader of the National Party.鈥听
鈥淗e has done a really good job. You might want to belittle it with those sort of questions,鈥 the Prime Minister said.听
When it was put to him that it was Bridges who called Coster a 鈥渨okester鈥, Luxon said: 鈥淲ell I am not Simon Bridges, if you haven鈥檛 noticed. I am Christopher Luxon, leader of the National Party and Prime Minister of New Zealand鈥.听
鈥淪ince we came to power, we made a really clear set of expectations, as we did with a number of [chief executives], and laid that out really clearly. He has done an exceptionally good job.鈥听

Carmel Sepuloni, the acting Labour leader while Chris Hipkins is overseas, said she had a lot of confidence in Coster.听
She said National had changed its tune on the Police Commissioner.听
鈥淭hey were looking from the outside, challenging as Opposition. I think now they have got in there, they see things a little bit differently. We are supportive of him taking up this role.鈥听
Sepuloni said National has a 鈥渞eputation for undermining the public sector鈥 and Bridges鈥 comments were 鈥渋ndicative of the National Party overall鈥.听
鈥淗ere they are in a position now appointing a very credible public servant to a very credible role after having criticised him hugely in the past. That is embarrassing.鈥听
Coster, who has been the Police Commissioner since 2020, will leave the role in November, months ahead of his contracted term, which was due to end in April of next year.听
In a statement, he said the news 鈥渂rings a mix of emotions鈥 as he had wanted to see through the implementation of upcoming initiatives like the gang-patch ban.听
鈥淚n terms of my appointment, I know full well the impact social investment will have on our communities, so this opportunity is an exciting one, and there is much to be done in the lead-up to Budget 25.听
鈥淪ocial investment is one of the current Government鈥檚 key pillars for improving outcomes from government investment. The SIA [Social Investment Agency] has been established as a new central agency to lead and oversee this programme of work, reporting to minister [Nicola] Willis.鈥听
The Social Investment Agency is tasked with using data from across government departments to intervene early to break cycles of disadvantage and poverty. A Social Investment Fund will commission services from community, non-government-organisations and iwi.听
