Broadcasting Minister slams Winston Peters after trainwreck interview

Broadcasting Minister Willie Jackson has castigated New Zealand First leader Winston Peters after his tense听

The interview became heated at many moments, especially when Tame questioned how much two of Peters鈥 party鈥檚 flagship policies would cost to implement.

At one point, Peters called Tame a 鈥渄irt merchant鈥, which Jackson claims is 鈥漚n insult to the nation and an insult to Jack鈥.

鈥淭he astonishing abuse Winston Peter鈥檚 [sic] gave Jack Tame on TVNZ this morning highlights just how dangerous NZ First could be if they were part of government,鈥 Jackson posted tonight on social media.

鈥淛ack had an obligation to ask Winston the tough questions, yet all Winston did was smear Jack, smear TVNZ and deny the voter from hearing legitimate questions about Winston鈥檚 donations, [due to] his inability to answer any basic questions about his own policy.鈥

During this morning鈥檚 interview, Tame asked how many prisoners Peters鈥 new听for gang members would hold.

But the former Deputy Prime Minister seemed unable to give an answer. Tame pointed out that a prison built to hold 3000 would be the equivalent of three Mount Eden Prisons.

鈥淗ow much would that cost?鈥 asked Tame.

Peters said: 鈥淚鈥檓 not going to have a fiscal argument when you don鈥檛 know what you鈥檙e talking about.鈥

Tame pushed further for more details, saying, 鈥淭his is your policy, you have complained in this campaign that people haven鈥檛 asked you about policy details.鈥

Peters then snapped back with, 鈥淲e won鈥檛 have amateur hour based on what you don鈥檛 know, and if you鈥檒l just keep quiet, take a valium, and realise that if Corrections officers don鈥檛 know, the Minister of Corrections doesn鈥檛 know, how can you know for certain?鈥

Jackson claimed Peters鈥 answers to Tame鈥檚 questions proved 鈥渢he contempt the right have for being held accountable鈥.

鈥淐hippy was right to refuse to have anything to do with Winston. Yes, we worked with him in 2017, but that was a different Winston and a different time,鈥 Jackson wrote.

鈥淭his Winston has totally lost the plot.鈥

Peters told the听Herald听it was not worth his time responding to Jackson鈥檚 post.

鈥漌illie鈥檚 on his way out and he knows it.鈥

Jackson also referenced the quote a New Zealand First candidate has been condemned for saying - 鈥淐ry if you want to, we don鈥檛 care. We are the party with the cultural mandate and the courage to cut out your disease and bury you permanently鈥 - which Peters claimed was about Jackson personally.

Tame pointed out that the comment was in fact targeted at all M膩ori. The quote also became a hot topic at this听.

Late last year, Jackson had to apologise after his conduct during an interview with Tame on the same programme made headlines. During that appearance, Jackson claimed it was 鈥渟uch a negative interview鈥 - while he was the Broadcasting Minister.

Jackson was asked about Peters鈥 interview this morning at Labour鈥檚 West Auckland rally this afternoon.

Speaking as Labour鈥檚 broadcasting spokesman, Jackson said he believed Peters was out of control and resorted to abusing Tame.

鈥淣ormally he鈥檚 controlling the interview, but Jack was all over him.鈥

Asked whether he had some sympathy for Peters given his own interactions with Tame, Jackson said he did not.
