Prime Minister Chris Luxon appeared to have waded into somewhat uncharted territory following his major foreign affairs speech at the prestigious Lowy Institute in Sydney.听听
His speech mainly focused on New Zealand鈥檚 strong relationship with Australia, growing tensions in the Pacific region and the complex relationship with China. 听听
And for the most part, Luxon largely stuck to his script when it came to his speech. 听
But it was some of his off-the-cuff remarks in the Q&A section of the evening which turned more than a few heads. 听听
In keeping with the theme of most of his day, Luxon weighed into the debate around infrastructure and the cost of capital. 听听
"We鈥檝e had our first Reserve Bank cut, which is fantastic and helps us get interest rates down and we鈥檒l probably get another two cuts before Christmas.鈥澨听
Speaking to reporters after the speech, he laughed off any suggestion he was issuing the Reserve Bank direction, in breach of its staunch independence.听听
鈥淲hat I鈥檓 reflecting is our hope that there will be some further movement on interest rates,鈥 he said, adding that the market is pricing further OCR reductions.听听
He also upped his rhetoric around the levels of regional stability in the Pacific, when asked about New Zealand鈥檚 response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.听听
"Ukraine could happen in a flashpoint across our Indo-Pacific region as well, and it鈥檚 a good reminder that security and conflict issues can have huge economic impact and suffering to people...鈥 听听
After a few more questions from the moderator and the audience, the conversation shifted to the Olympics 鈥 where Luxon joked that New Zealand beat the Aussies when measuring medals per capita. 听听听
But it was his comments about Australian Olympian, and viral breakdancing sensation, Rachel Gunn 鈥 aka Ray Gunn 鈥 which drew the largest laugh. 听听
For the second time that day 鈥 the first time was in front New South Wales Treasurer Daniel Mookhey at an officials鈥 infrastructure meeting 鈥 Luxon revealed his admiration of the now infamous Olympian. 听听
鈥淲hen you think about New Zealand and Australia鈥檚 contributions [to the world]: You have the iconic Steve Irwin, we have the great Kiwi suffragette Kate Sheppard, and you鈥檝e now gifted the world Ray Gunn the breakdancer,鈥 he told those gathered at the institute.听听
鈥淲e鈥檙e loving her in New Zealand, we think she鈥檚 awesome.鈥澨听
He told media after the Q&A that he has watched Ray Gunn鈥檚 performance 鈥渟everal times鈥.听听
鈥淚 would just say its captivating every time I watch it.鈥听
