  • Blair Murray, 23, has completed a  campaign with  and is tipped for the British and Irish Lions.
  • Murray鈥檚 style aligns with Welsh coach Matt Sherratt and he ranks fifth in running metres.
  • Overlooked in New Zealand, Murray pursued opportunities in  due to his eligibility and desire for higher honours

Only six months after finishing up his club rugby in Christchurch, Blair Murray has completed a full Six Nations campaign with the Welsh national team.

The 23-year-old鈥檚 meteoric rise could soon produce another chapter, with UK pundits picking him as a bolter for the British and Irish Lions team to tour Australia this year.

鈥淚 can鈥檛 even believe it鈥檚 a question, bro,鈥 Murray said, laughing.

The fullback/wing鈥檚 form comes as no surprise, as his vibrant style of play fits the philosophy of Welsh coach Matt Sherratt, who stepped into the role in place of Warren Gatland halfway through the season.

The stats back him up as well, with just over 300 individual running metres to his name, placing Murray fifth in the entire competition.

When Murray first got the tap on the shoulder to don the red jersey in November last year, he wanted to do what every rugby player would do 鈥 call home.

But the 13-hour time difference meant he had to hold fire until a reasonable hour for his Kiwi dad and Welsh mum to take the call.

鈥淚t was a very proud moment for me to be able to say that,鈥 he said on a Zoom call from Wales.

鈥淗aving them come over to watch my first test [against Fiji in Cardiff] was an unreal experience.鈥

Murray was overlooked for many years in the Crusaders environment and the highest grade he reached here was eight games for Canterbury鈥檚 NPC side.

鈥淸In 2024], the Crusaders told me they didn鈥檛 really have a spot for me in the next couple of years, which is fine.

鈥淭hey wanted more experience and obviously I didn鈥檛 have any at that level. After they said that, I just wanted experience at a higher level.鈥

Realising his dream for higher honours wasn鈥檛 likely to happen here, Murray began looking overseas.

鈥淲ales was always in the back of my mind because of my eligibility, so the fact I could play for them definitely made it more attractive to come here.鈥

A big part of his development was playing for the University of Canterbury Vipers, who made it to last year鈥檚 club rugby finals.

鈥淢ost enjoyable rugby I鈥檝e ever played,鈥 Murray said.

While Vipers coach Dan O鈥橞rien was sad to see his premier player leave, he was excited Murray was getting his long overdue opportunity.

鈥淏lair鈥檚 one of those good examples of just getting in and persisting,鈥 O鈥橞rien said.

鈥淗e was overlooked by teams [and] had a number of people saying, 鈥榤aybe he鈥檚 not tall enough, maybe he鈥檚 not big enough鈥.鈥

O鈥橞rien said he now gets chills when he sees Murray walk on to the field to play for Wales 鈥渁nd not only play for Wales but be the best player on the park鈥.

Despite competing at the highest levels in international rugby, O鈥橞rien said Murray hasn鈥檛 forgotten his roots.

鈥淗e scores his first try for Wales and throws the V鈥檚 up [the Vipers鈥 victory salute] 鈥 that speaks volumes to me about his connection to the club."

O鈥橞rien said Murray鈥檚 form and versatility would put him in good stead to crack the 37-man Lions squad in May.

As for Murray, he鈥檚 keeping his feet planted firmly on the ground.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think I鈥檝e got a shot ... I鈥檓 pretty happy staying here and trying to get as many caps for Wales as I can.鈥
