Why Fifa Women's World Cup tickets are currently unavailable to buy

There鈥檚 less than four months until the Fifa Women鈥檚 World Cup but single match tickets have gone off sale.

More than half a million tickets had sold before the governing body took sales offline for the tournament hosted in Australia and New Zealand, leaving only 鈥渉ospitality packages鈥 available for purchase 鈥 but it鈥檚 not because individual options have sold out.

New Zealand Fifa Women鈥檚 World Cup 2023 chief operating officer Jane Patterson said fans can expect individual tickets to come back on sale.

鈥淚t might seem unusual for tickets to go off sale just months out from a major event, but it鈥檚 common for global events of this scale in order to allow seat allocations to take place,鈥 Patterson told the聽Herald.

They do this so they can create better atmosphere among the crowd.

New Zealand Fifa Women鈥檚 World Cup communications manager Kim Taylor said 鈥渨hen you usually purchase a ticket in NZ, you buy a seat number鈥, however this was not an option before tickets went off sale.

Taylor said for Fifa ticketing 鈥測ou purchase the ticket, but your seat is allocated at a later date鈥.

鈥淭he seat allocation for the approximately 650,000 tickets already sold are being allocated for each stadium.

鈥淥ne of the reasons is that if 10,000 Americans buy tickets, they can be seated in the same area to create the atmosphere rather than be scattered throughout the stadium.鈥

This pause on ticket sales has been in plans since the ticketing programme was announced and isn鈥檛 unusual for an event of this size, Taylor explained.

Accessing tickets

鈥淭he good news is that tickets for the Fifa Women鈥檚 World Cup 2023 will go back on sale from 2pm on 11 April at the 100-days-to-go milestone,鈥 Patterson said.

From this date the tickets on sale will have allocated seats.

Previously purchased and future tickets will be available to download through the Fifa Women鈥檚 World Cup ticketing app, which will be available closer to the start date.

Taylor said: 鈥淎ll ticket purchasers will receive an email when the ticketing app is ready to be downloaded and their tickets are available within the app.鈥

Fifa said there鈥檚 been 鈥渟trong interest in the Football Ferns鈥 three group stage matches鈥, including the opening match on 20 July at Eden Park against Norway.

鈥淎s expected, tickets to see defending champions USA are in hot demand, with all of their matches expected to sell out as well.鈥

罢丑别听Herald聽also understands the Group E fixture between the USA and the Netherlands 鈥 a repeat of the 2019 World Cup final 鈥 in Wellington on July 27 is close to a sell out.

鈥楤uy early鈥

鈥淢y advice would be to have a look at the 29 matches being played in Aotearoa so you鈥檙e ready to go come Tuesday 11 April,鈥 said Patterson.

鈥淲e can鈥檛 guarantee tickets will be available if you leave it too close to kick-off with interest in this Fifa Women鈥檚 World Cup starting to build.鈥

Fifa has encouraged fans to purchase early and not wait until the tournament has started to secure their spot at the biggest women鈥檚 sporting event.
