  • Liam Lawson was demoted to Racing Bulls after two grands prix, replaced by Yuki Tsunoda.
  • Kiwi athletes and politicians, including Dan Carter and David Seymour, have expressed support for Lawson.
  • Lawson thanked supporters on Instagram, calling the decision 鈥渢ough鈥 but expressing gratitude for his journey.

Kiwi athletes and politicians have rallied to support Liam Lawson after Red Bull Racing鈥檚 decision to demote the Kiwi driver to the Racing Bulls team.

Lawson lasted just two grands prix before Formula One giants Red Bull pulled him out of the firing line. Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda will take his place at Red Bull.

Lawson broke his silence this morning with an Instagram post of images and drawings from his childhood with a caption explaining that the decision was 鈥渢ough鈥.

The post quickly garnered thousands of likes and comments with an outpouring of support for Lawson.

All Black legend Dan Carter encouraged Lawson to continue forward.

鈥淲e鈥檙e all behind you bro. Onwards and upwards!鈥

Fellow Kiwi racing great Nascar driver Shane van Gisbergen told Lawson to 鈥減rove 鈥榚m wrong鈥 in a comment that had garnered several hundred likes.

His girlfriend, Hannah St John, shared her support for him in the comments.

鈥淗ead up my love and show them what they鈥檙e missing.鈥

Act Party leader David Seymour said on social media that the decision to cut Lawson was 鈥済utting鈥

鈥淔rom the few times I鈥檝e met Liam, I know he has the character to overcome this unfair and unwise decision.

鈥淜ia kaha Liam and watch this space, world.鈥

It followed comments from Sports Minister Mark Mitchell who said he was 鈥渄isappointed鈥 in the news.

鈥淗e鈥檚 at the top of the pinnacle of motorsport, and I personally think that he deserved to have a bit more time and a few more rounds.鈥

Lawson said on Instagram that being part of the Red Bull racing team had been a dream since he was a kid.

鈥淚t鈥檚 tough, but I鈥檓 grateful for everything that鈥檚 brought me to this point.

鈥淭o every one of you who鈥檚 stood by me, thank you for all the support - it means the world.鈥

The switch between Lawson and Tsunoda is effective immediately and means Tsunoda will be behind the wheel of the notoriously difficult RB21 for his home race at Japan鈥檚 Suzuka circuit at the start of next month.
