Lulu Sun is still busy working her way through countless messages of support in between planning her schedule for the rest of the tennis season after her remarkable quarter-final run at Wimbledon.
Sun became the first New Zealand singles player to reach the final eight of the event since Chris Lewis made the men鈥檚 final in 1983. The New Zealand flag continues to fly at SW19 this morning with Erin Routliffe and Michael Venus both advancing to their respective doubles semifinals.
Speaking to New Zealand media this morning following her three sets defeat to Donna Vekic, Sun said the response to her run at the grand slam has been 鈥榮urreal鈥.
鈥淚鈥檝e had a bit more time to really think about my run here at Wimbledon, it just means a lot to me to be able to be in this position and to bring up tennis, Tennis New Zealand and New Zealand itself... and to be able to inspire people,鈥 the 23-year-old said.
鈥淚 heard people who weren鈥檛 even watching tennis, started watching tennis. An athlete you really feel special when someone tells you that and to be able to do it for New Zealand even means so much more. I鈥檓 just super happy to be able to do that,鈥 Sun said.

She was still working her way through the messages of support.
鈥淚 can鈥檛 count really, I鈥檝e been trying to message everyone back. It鈥檚 incredibly a lot more than before. So I鈥檓 trying to do that, from the time that I can. The amount of support that I鈥檝e received from the people who are watching here at Wimbledon to the people that were watching in New Zealand is amazing and just really surreal to be able to receive that much support. I鈥檓 just in awe really.鈥
Sun鈥檚 world ranking will improve from 123 before Wimbledon to the mid-50s when the world rankings are updated, which won鈥檛 happen until after the Paris Olympics. That means she will avoid qualifying for grand slams after becoming the first qualifier to reach the final eight at Wimbledon since 2010. It also means invites to bigger tournaments and more prize money after earning a career-high $782,056 this week. Earlier this year she won $10,022 for winning a lower-level ITF event.
鈥淚鈥檓 going to be able to play more WTA tournaments... it will be a lot easier to schedule in tournaments which will benefit a lot because time is important and it helps you if you鈥檙e able to schedule better and go to the tournaments where you know in advance where you鈥檙e going to go, it helps with preparation and training.

鈥淚t will definitely help me in development and progress.鈥
鈥淓ven when you鈥檙e 80 or 90 it鈥檚 really a tough environment because when you鈥檙e playing the ITF鈥檚 you鈥檙e not really getting as much money as you do if you鈥檙e playing the top events, the grand slams or the top WTA events. So you really have to pay everything by yourself. And this is not exactly a cheap sport,鈥 Sun added.
鈥淵ou can get a racquet and ball and play with your friends but as a professional it鈥檚 not a cheap sport. Everyone at the ITF level is fighting to get to this position so it鈥檚 something each and every player is working hard every day. So to have that jump is really important and necessary to further develop. With that you can prepare better.鈥
She鈥檚 withdrawn from this week鈥檚 Hungarian Grand Prix tournament as she isn鈥檛 in the main draw and it was a tight turnaround to make the qualifying. Instead she will begin preparation for the Olympics where she will play in the doubles with Routliffe.
鈥淭he Olympics is something bigger than yourself. You鈥檙e representing a country. Erin has a lot of experience on tour already. I鈥檝e just experienced Wimbledon so I think with both of our experiences on tour so far and our games, I think will give 100 percent obviously to each match that we鈥檙e going to play, and give it all for New Zealand.鈥
Sun is aware the expectations will now lift and she鈥檚 happy with that.
鈥淥bviously it鈥檚 going to come after my couple of wins here at Wimbledon,鈥 Sun said, slightly downplaying her seven-victory run through to the quarter-finals.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 think pressure is necessarily a bad thing. It depends on how you take it and obviously if I keep improving and keep working, I think results will come. I can鈥檛 focus on, you know 鈥業 wanna win, I wanna win鈥 because that鈥檚 not going to help as much as improving on every little aspect that I can towards my tennis.鈥
